Not sure what part of the game you're refering to as it's been a while, but check out the walkthrough in Gamebanshee's Arcanum section.

plates ??

Tulla plates:

If you view the map inside the school then you should have a general idea. I actually drew maps of the picture and the courtyard and linked the plates to a location on the picture.

The plates are organized in groups of four and when a specific gourp are successfully lit one door will open relating to that group of spells. You can activate the plate groups in any order only each group of four must be activated in order. If you look at the picture each colleget is surrounded by four simbols of specific spells Start on the pad corresponding with top spell symbol. Continue clockwise around the picture activating a pad for each spell symbol. The last spell in a group of four should be in front of a door.

To help id a particular spell symbol use the spell button in the Character screen of the game. They closely match the diagram. Add the spell name to the mad you drew.

On a second page draw an outline of the courtyard including all pad except the five around Pelojion. With both maps you should be able to id the spell groupings and open the doors.

I still have the maps I created for Arcanum several years ago and I still use them when I get to Tulla. There may be a better way but this does work.
