I'm pretty sure you can.

Nope. I was wrong. I just got a HLA for my Kensai/Mage and I could only choose the mage HLA's. Sorry.

Once you dual class to another class, the class you started with is "locked" - all your gained XPs goes to your new class, so the prev one won't improve anymore.

It gets worse...

Not only can you not pick HLAs from your inactive class, the inactive class EXP doesn't count toward getting access to HLAs, so a Kensai/Thief who dualled at 1,000,000 EXP will need ~4,000,000 EXP to get access to HLAs. Big downer for dual class munchins in ToB

So why not multiclassing instead? As far as I know, that way both chosen classes can be improved simultaneously, right? Is there a restriction which and how many classes you can pick into the multi? E.g. can I choose mage/paladin/thief even if it doesn't make much sense or is it restricted to a certain list offered by the game?

It is indeed restricted to :

Fighter/Mage
Fighter/Druid
Fighter/Cleric
Fighter/Thief

Mage/Thief
Mage/Cleric

Ranger/Druid

Fighter/Mage/Cleric
Fighter/Mage/Thief

Oh :( FM or FMT sounds the best, then. And the XPs are distributed evenly between the classes, right?

More..

Yes, EXP are distributed evenly.

Ranger/Druid is an error, it's Ranger/Cleric - but they get all divine spells

Oh.. sry.

In AD&D 2nd Edition, you can be Ranger/Druid, Fighter/Mage/Druid, etc.

No matter, I'll be a FM or F/M/T anyway. What's the use of druids, btw? In IWD they have really cool spells like Call Lightining and Tortoise Shell and wall of Moonlight/Fire, but Jaheira's spellbook is not such a big deal, I guess. I always keep her b/c of her quests (and she's an old aquaintance, and lonely without Khalid, and so on, and so forth... She's just grown on me :) )

Druid's have some really useful spells, for example
Insect Plague (the mage killing spell),
Ironskin (especially for fighter/fruids and cleric/rangers, a Stoneskin that cannot be breached),
Conjure Fire Elemental (on of the best summons in the game),
Nature's Beauty (blinds everything around the druid with no save, even liches & dragons if not stopped by magic resistance),
Greater Elemental Summoning (ToB only, summons one of the Elemental Princes)
There are three kinds of people that no one understands: geniuses, madmen and guys that mumble.
