Sling or Dagger?

Post by Krian »

Hi

Since the begining of IWD, I've been using my mage with a sling when I'm not casting spells, and now, near the end of the game, I find this dagger giving me 1 extra spell slot to memorize for spell levels 1,2 and 3, but, of course, that means keeping the dagger in hand and not lend long range support or lose the 3 slots by selecting the sling.

So, what do you propose please? Do I substitute the sling for more spells or do I keep the sling?

Thanks

PS: I haven't started HoW yet, so would a sling be useful there?

if you use the spells before swiching to the sling, you won't lose any spells. then replace the dagger, set the spells befor resting and that should do it.

as for how... i found that ranged weapons are nice, but (execpt bows, crossbows, and throwing axes--- depending on your arrows/bolts or the ax's abilities) less effective. this comming from a person who has beaten iwd & how 4 times...

Go with the dagger. You should have plenty of spells to cast to keep you occupied during combat, and a puny sling from your wizard won't speed up fights much anyway. A well timed MM or Ag's Scorcher (never mind Fireball, or Slow or Web, etc) will do better.

At that stage of the game, you can afford for your mage to stand around in minor skirmishes, and you can use the extra spells in closer fights. I have a cleric with one of those warhammers that adds spells slots and a point of Wisdom (and thus more slots), and he never uses a ranged weapon anymore. He mostly uses spells (those extra slots are useful for Magical Stone and Hold Person), and occasionally goes into melee. I sometimes memorize a couple of those magical hammer spells, in case I want him to get into the action from range.

But with a mage, who has great spells to hit from distance, stay with the dagger. It plays to your strengths and you needn't give up the spell boost for a physical weapon. Slinging is, after all, probably the least effective offensive action your mage can do.
