XP SP2 Causes ToEE to crash on exit

Post by cjmnews »

Anyone seen this problem? I've seen it twice now.

Any work arounds found yet?

I guess it really doesn't matter since it is on exit from the game. I already saved. It's just annoying.

Hi everyone, I'm new here

I've just started ToEE and all was fine until I installed SP2 after my first gaming session. I've since experienced both the bugs mentioned above since the installation of SP2 (ie crash on exit, cannot loot).

Other boards have said that it's to do with DirectX 9.0c which comes with SP2. To rectify this you need a DirectX remover (use a freeware utility, just Google it, they are easy to find). So you remove DirectX 9.0c and re-install 9.0b (which comes with the game) and in theory that sorts the problem.

I found however that it only cured the crash on exit problem, and I still can't loot

Tonight I'm going to uninstall SP2 and see what happens...I'll let you know!

If anyone else can help, please do so!

Cheers guys

SP2 has to be the problem

I have been playing for a few days however when I tried to play today after installing WinXP SP2 I couldnt loot corpses in any zone, and received errors when exiting game. I also couldnt zone into the Earth node inside the temple, I would crash to desk top every time.

My party is level 9 and I am in the final stages of the game, I really hope I can get it working again, going to try uninstalling SP2 and reverting back to DX9.0b if I have to I guess.

*****NOTE*****

---> Uninstalling SP2 fixed the looting and crash on exit problems, so I assume all is back to normal. I didnt have to fiddle with Direct X

Yep, SP2 was the problem

I uninstalled SP2 (using Add / Remove Programs) and both bugs have gone.

Hi, can you guys report your bug to Microsoft. Since I don't own this game I don't know what the specific bugs are. Maybe Microsoft will correct the problem in future patches for SP2 but at least for now if you report to them they can add it to their lists of SP2 incompatibilities or instabilities.

To report:

Maybe the bugs are attributed to the Windows firewall. Have any of you tried turning it off when playing?

I don't use their firewall. Turned it off as soon as SP2 was installed.
And I still have the issues.

Now I have to decide if the improvements in wireless networking are worth not being able to play this game....I only have about an hour into it, so it's not like I have any attachment to my characters yet.

SP2 Bugs

Thanks for all the info. By the way, the looting bug can be circumvented without uninstalling SP2. You need to go into combat mode, then loot. It's a nuisance but one I can live with.
No news on the other issues though.

Windows xp sp2 is the problem

I had the same problem which also affects looting corpses. The official website has more info on this problem. The only way to loot corpses is to go into combat mode C or wait for them to rot. Removing SP2 fixed my problem. There doesn't seem to be any fixes for this at the moment. The Circle of 8 group haven't been able to fix it yet either. They work closely with the lead programmer of the game and he said he would look into the issue. He's currently working on Vampire the Masquerade 2 and will be taking a vacation before he gets back to look into this so it may be a while. My suggestion is to get rid of sp2 for the time being. I've also found out that Freedom Force doesn't work under sp2 either so another reason to get rid of it, if you have or are thinking of getting that great game. There is a big discussion whether it's caused by sp2 or directx 9.0c which comes with sp2 but since it seems to work fine once sp2 is gone, i would think it was sp2. Check out the toee forums or maybe even co8's headquarters regularly for a upcoming fix to this problem.

Neither SP2 or DX9 was to blame with me :(

Bad news, guys. I got the no-loot bug after installing DX9C, still running SP1, so I figured it had to be DX, however, after reinstalling 8.1 ToEE Still didn't loot, except when in combat mode, so I installed and uninstalled (hmm) SP2. This didn't help either. The only way to loot for me, whether on DX8, 9 SP1 or 2 is to go into combat mode by pressing 'C' or wait until the bodies disappear

Loot fix maybe for XP w SP2

I have XPSP2, TOEE with 2nd patch available from their website:

http://www.atarisupport.com/newfaq/dung ... =DOWNLOADS

I could not loot prior to the patch nor after but after I installed it I found this other patch online and I can loot (I wasn't about to uninstall SP2 for this damn game and this seems to work -- at least I have been able to loot the first 30 things after the patch ;) :

Anyhow, hope this helps -- it worked for me.
