What's up with Kni?

Hey guys.

Just a random question. I'm going through the game again out of boredom, and I started wondering about Kni, the alien guy you meet on Dantooine in the back end of the Courtyard. Here's the thing; while I enjoy it, KOTOR is a pretty predictable game. One of the flaws is that you can usually easily tell who has important information for you, just by looking to see if the character has a name. Kni has name, and provides some brief chatter, but doesn't seem to do much else. My question: is there a point to him being there, or is he a red herring?
