Anyone tried to solo this game?

Post by Spotz »

I searched through the forum looking for a thread on this but I couldn't find one.

Has anyone tried to play this through with only one character? I realize that by 1/2 way through you'd hit 10th level and maybe be in a world of hurt with only one character toward the end, but has anyone out there done it?

Just curious and thinking about trying it.

I've actually done mainly solo games. I have done quite well as a (fallen) paladin, rogue, and a ranger, all different classes. I've actually haven't gotten to the Temple yet, so I'm not sure how hard it would be. If you do try it, good luck!
If you are an enemy, I will summon wings to you and fly you away to Hell.
If you are a friend, I will summon wings to you and fly you away to Heaven.
If you are neither, leave me be.

only one could be very hard.
but leveling up with 2 chars could be funny...
think of a, uhm,... fighter/thief/cleric...?
with duoble weapon feature, sneak attack, improved critical,
healing himself (with enough concentration)...

same with a sorcerer/wizard/....

if that's possible, of course. haven't checked it out, maybe 2 classes are maximum here.

for xp, i would fight undead at emridy meadows...
or 'rest' in the dungeons...

could be very funny...

I got all the way to the end running solo with my gnome enchanter specialist wizard. It's not as hard as you might think. It did require having to memorize a lot of the dungeon layout, and I ended up martyring every NPC in the game with my "lawful good" character ;-)

My strategy was simple:

1) Use any and all NPCs as suicide martyrs, then take their possessions to equip my character.

2) use stealth to penetrate the fourth level of the temple as quickly as possible, taking advantage of the gnome's racial bonus to hide, and the ease of obtaining elven cloak, elven boots, ring of invisibility and gloves of dexterity early in the game.

3) use charm person (and later suggestion/charm monster) on enemy leaders to subsequently use as tanks to defeat the guardians of the primary treasure hoards.

4) After loading up on magic items from Temple level 3 and 4 using stealth and charmed minions, backtrack to the moathouse and start leveling up.

5) At level 10, make godly crafted items to equip NPCs/charmed enemies, memorize fireball using the empowered spell feat, and finish the game.

.

try the "assassin"-build from the FAQ - extremly hard to hit - and...

...after getting the swords (what you should do as early as possible but with sneak and the right clothes this isn't very hard) then you won't have anymore problems afterwards!

...only the moathouse is a little bit tricky stand-alone - there you will have to use sneak and hit & run tactics !

what could help are some crafting capable PCs - just for crafting - or take some NPCs with you - but both isn't really soloing! ;)

Hmmm

Sorry to say. But I think it just is imposssible. You need a starting character that should be able to cover most things a party can do. And so far. No class has showed this ability. The character to start with that, hmmm I think a Ranger. He covers most the combat and such. He is really ignored dispite his abilities. I think then you should go on with some kind of spell caster. Hmmmmm. WHere is this FAQ?

tested the "assassin", the "kensai", cleric & sorc build(all described in the FAQ) in all of the major battles (including IUZ) stand-alone - with the following results:

assassin:
+ absolutely no problems in all major temple battles
+ can sneak next to the main threat
+ with a sneak first strike (full attack) he kills casters in one round and and most others in two
+ "normal" enemies will only hit him with a natural 20
+ has extremly good saves

kensai:
+ there are only very few enemies who could hit her with less then 20
+ very good against larger enemy groups
+ and doesn't need to care about saves at all (very important when soloing)
- but needs longer to kill some of the big bosses with very high AC

cleric:
+ does a good job soloing
- but is far behind the other two (problems against high AC - not the best AC
+ some good self-buffing spells

sorc:
- really hard against enemies SR and good saves - when she has to rely on melee
+ but some defensive spells and with lots of potions not completely impossible

biggest problem when soloing:
- it's not that easy to reach level 4 or 5
- you will get in real trouble with a solo level 2 or 3 PC in the moathouse !
- trying to get EXP via resting will need a reload in most cases after a date with 2 or 3 trolls !

solo-fun:

soloing with the Alu-demon (you need to keep on PC in the background)

Hmmm.

Using NPC's as wildcards doesn't really count. Not only that. But a dual Fragarach Scather wield is considered cheating. (Then again. giving a character all 18's is also considered cheating.) I will send a profile of what I did, (or am planning to do) with my ranger, Rangir.

with the NPCs I fully agree - with the superstats also - but scather & frag isn't cheating cause you could get both even accidentally !

if the prince falls in combat (what could happen) - and you resurrect him you will get both - both are different swords so you also don't have a duplicated weapon - so where is the problem...?

...but maybe you could call it an exploit ;)
