Suddenly, I can no longer open chests and crates, including my Tarant crate that has all my collected stuff in it. Click on an unlocked crate, no inventory screen; nothing happens. Has this happened to any of you before?
Ordinarily, losing all my hoarded stuff wouldn't be the end of the world -- but what's the use of playing through the rest of the game if I can never open another chest?
Any help appreciated greatly TIA,

I'm not sure if this is the same problem I have...see my post below about the blade of Xerxes.

If your NPC is too close they may block your move to open a chest. Tell them to spread out using the F4 key.
Did you kill a gaurd somewhere in the game? If so you may be blocked in every town. This game can be played as a dark person but its more straight forward playng a light character. Look at your character screen check your alingment. Go do good tasks to move it to the positive side. But you can't recouver from killing a gaurd. Except to reload an old savegame file.
If you want to play Arcanum from a dark point of view then setup one site out of town to store things. The Ancient Maze would be one place. A chest is near the entry for that site.
Lastly you can break into a chest but the Inn manager may not like that.

Killing Guards
What the heck are you talking about with the guards? I kill guards all the time. If you do it out of sight in Tarant no one seems to care, about the only time the guards get mystical powers to sense you killed one of their own is in Dernholm following one of the melee mastery quest conclusions.
I killed a guard in Shadowed HIlls after robbing the bank and every town after that the guards attacked. Same thing for dwarfs, after killing Magnus, the dwarfs attacked me everywhere and I could not talk to the dwarf on the Island of Dispare. I quite that game and played the game straight and positive after that.

Blinded
I went over to the Sierra Forum and did a search. Problem solved.
If you cannot open chests, you may have been blinded in battle. The situation does not improve with time, but if you munch down a Cure All or perform a Major Healing on yourself, you are back in business with chests. I did the latter.
Now y'all know...
Thanks,
