Big-Time Technical Problem

Post by Gaidal »

Well this is most irritating. I just finished Chapter 5 (Underdark) and I got to the surface, talked to the elven captain, etc. I leave, then run into Drizzt, talk to him and everything's good.

However, when I try to leave that little area and go to Athkalta, it asks me for Disc 2. Which is fine, so I put in Disc 2 and then BG2 minimizes, telling me that Disc 4 was removed from the drive so please put it back in. I do that, then it goes back into the game, which (can you guess?) asks me for Disc 2 again. Repeat ad infinitum, until the game finally crashes.

Anyone know some way around this? I've tried rebooting my computer and all that.. Next I'm going to try maybe going to Windspear Hills or something on Disc 3 and hopefully THEN I can get to Athkalta. If not I guess I'll try a reinstall and at a last resort, do a full install of the game. This is my first time through, btw. :) Trying to finish before ToB comes out.

Btw, there's nothing wrong with Disc 2, no scratches and the media reads off the CD just fine, movies play on startup, etc.

Just re-install the game with a full install and load your saved game.

Yeah I guess I have to since switching to CD3 does the same thing.

$20 says it's a copy protection issue. *swearing* It's not like that stuff does a bit of good besides causing issues with my DVD-ROM drive. Diablo 2 didn't even work till 1.06!!

Actually, it's probably just a feature of your DVD-ROM drive. Mine does something similar, though not so extreme. When I eject a disc that it's currently reading from, it asks me if I'm sure I want to do that. Yours apparently doesn't bother to ask; it just tells you that you need to put the disc back in and click Ok. An oversight on the designer's part, I'm sure.

Regardless, doing a full install will fix your problem. Load times will be a lot faster, the game will run more smoothly, and you'll be able to circumvent your little ejecting problem. As long as you don't delete the Black Isle folder from your computer after uninstalling, your saved game will be fine.

Well the only thing I have in response to that is that it DID work for 3/4 of the game since I had to switch between CD's 2 and 3 for Chapter 3 trips to Trademeet and Windspear Hills. I'll see if the same thing happens with other games, but somehow I doubt it. :(

And luckily I actually have 2.5 gigs of hard drive space free cause that's a helluva lot. *lol*
