Did I waste my money?
Ok, I wasn't sure if I should've put this in NWN2 or here, because it's kinda both. I haven't played NWN in a very long time. I've constantly played and replayed my BG series. What's wrong? BG was a way older game! And this makes me wonder; did I waste my money on NWN? Should I have left it on the shelf? And, far more importantly, should I leave NWN2 on the shelf too? If NWN2 is anything like its predecessor, I probably won't play that one either ... which would equate to a waste of perfectly good money on my part! So I need your opinions. Obviously, since you're on the NWN board you're probably partial in favor of NWN, but try to be as impartial as you can. So, let me phrase the question:
For those of you who have played BG series, and THEN played NWN, do you believe you've wasted your money? Do you think I would be wasting MY money, then to get a sequal to such a game?

Did you waste your money ? - well I guess only you can really answer this.
I played BG/BG2 extensively - and have played NwN a lot as well, so I don't feel I wasted my money for sure.
The reason is that NwN isn't like BG - it is much more directed towards multiplayer, thus to get the full usage, one should really try multiplayer games as well.
However, I've played the campaigns much as well, and I did not find them terrible good, compared to BG2, but then again - not much holds in comparison with BG2 either.
There are many other games where I felt I have wasted my money, but NwN is not one of them.
As for how NwN2 will be, that is still a tough question, because it is relative still early in the process. However, Obsidian Entertainment knows that (many) people didn't like the campaign in NwN, so my bet is they will try to focus much more on that part of the game then Bioware did with NwN.

I know how you feel. I played BG II over several times (not enough times to get bored of it, though, I'm planning to replay it again with a different character), and loved it so much it became an obsession
And then started to play NWN and I was like "Um.. not exactly what I expected..." So put it off for a while. And one day I started to play it again and realized that it's not that bad after all... I got to like it quickly (after accepting that no story and cool NPCs can be expected) and it's one of my favourite games now.
BG II can NEVER be beaten, I say.

Up the IRONS!
Sure the OC is boring as hell, but you don't buy NWN for that, you buy it for online goodness. I've played waaaay more NWN then BG, I only bothered to get through BG twice.

I had a similar experience to Brynn. I've played BG1 and 2 so many times I don't even want to imagine how much time it adds up to. When I started NWN I wasn't that keen at all - I didn't like the 3D (I can't remember why though), or the way the camera followed the char, or the way you could only have 1 other guy in your party and couldn't control them. Basically, it wasn't BG so I wasn't happy.
Recently, after having not bought any games in a long time I started looking over old games to see if there was anything I fancied and I spotted NWN. I releasied I had hardly played much (I had completed the pennisula district and that was it) so I installed it am now playing it and having hell of a lot of fun! I thought it was a waste of money, but I've completely changed my mind now. I haven't played any online NWN, but I can't wait to try! I intend to complete the campaign first and will probably end up buying all the add on packs (as I only have the original right now).

I have yet to finish the official campaign, I never seem to make it beyond midway in chapter three. Perhaps if I had the time and energy to commit to online playing I would feel differently, but for me the game was a serious letdown, so I guess I felt a bit cheated.
For me, and of course this is highly subjective, NWN lacks the storyline and NPCs of the BG series and PST, it does not present the tactical challenges of the IWD series and it lacks the complete freedom, and graphics of Morrowind.
So, in sum, I just found the game quite empty... and depressing. As I said, though, I imagine going multiplayer would likely change my opinion somewhat, since the online elements were the real focus of the game.

Umm...
I played BG2 first, and loved it! So I decided to get NWN, and I just finished it. NWN has the better graphics, but BG2 has a better storyline and NPC's and such. I have yet to play BG1, and I would say that BG2 is better than NWN, but I would still buy any NWN game any time.
In other words, I don't think it is a waste of money, but of course, thats just my opinion.

Well, I did buy BG1 and didn't like it. I like to level up often in an RPG and see the growing of experience and skills of my character... And BG1 wasn't this! (only level 7 max, if I remember correctly, depending on character-class). I tested Planescape- didn't like it. I tested BG2 - didn't like it. I tested Pools of Radiance - didn't like it. And at the release-time of NWN I tested it also and - didn't like it!
A few weeks ago, however, a collegue of me has talked about NWN, and that he plays it. I played KOTOR, and liked it very much, so I decided to buy NWN gold+ HoU. And since then, I don't play any other game at the moment. But I think, NWN is only that good, if SoU and HoU are installed.
I'm looking forward to NWN2 and also to KOTOR2! And perhaps, I try Temple of elemental evil, although the max level of this game is 10!

Well . . . as someone else said, whether or not it's a waste of money is pretty much up to you. I've played just about every D&D type RPG I could find going all the way back to the ancient DOS versions and I've found that the NWN series are just buggy as all get out. Reminds me of the frustrations involved in playing the original Pools of Radiance, sometimes.
You always need to stay up with whatever the latest patches are and make sure that you have the latest drivers for your video cards. Even at that, there are times when I've had to completely uninstall the games and reinstall them (with all of the patches) to get them to work. I gave up on NWN2 about halfway through chapter 2 when none of those things would get a critical action to appear that completely blocked the story from progressing.
The BG and BG II series have the NWN series beat hands down for stability and single-player playability. But NWN has superior graphics and sound and a better GUI.
The NWN games are all very linear. Similar to the Icewind Dale games. No real "free play" like the BG set.
If you're a hard-core AD&D fan, then you're pretty much stuck with whatever gets put out by the Atari/Bioware bunch on these, so it's your call on whether you are willing to lay down your coin.
Cheers.
