Read the manual.

Also read the spell descriptions. It all comes down to simple common sense, and game style.

There is no "best" spell options. It comes down to style of play and senario, ie. who you are fighting.

good luck.

NPC's will walk away from your party depending on your reputation. Good characters will leave when it becomes to low (think 4) and evil will leave when it's hihger then 18. Neutral characters will always stay.

You can learn spells by rightclicking a scroll and write them to your spellbook. The hihger your int. the bigger change of succeeding. Also specialist mages cant learn spells of the oposide school.

PS. Magic missile is always a good spell!

Magic Missile with spell sequencers = uber
ALso dispel magic is a good alternative for breach (as you wont have lvl 5 spells i guess :) )
And chromatic orb can be quite useful against lower lvl creatures (which u will certainly run into in BG I ;) )

Chromatic orb with spell sequencers is actually MUCH better.

Chromatic orbs effects range from blindness - death. with a sequencer it would atleast trigger 1 afftect, so really that is better.

However, without spell sequencer that is irrelivent (although things like Hold Person and Chromatic orb are great when fighting things like assasins, compared to trivial monsters)

"ALso dispel magic is a good alternative for breach (as you wont have lvl 5 spells i guess)"

Dispel is alright, but not worth walking around with. Its worth specificly selecting if theres a hard battle with a mage who is very defencive. Breach is much better than dispel (if I'm correct) because it lowers resist. However its not in BG1 and its not needed.

But yeah, get and use sleep, hold person, command word kill(I think.. its first level priest).

But yeah, great spells. Also fireball is really good, but when you reach a good mage shop just buy all the fireball wands you need, then stop using the spell and use something else.

Another good spell is Mirror image.

Like Moltovir said, ensaro dai and me0w please stay on topic.
This is the Baldur's Gate 1 forum. So there arent any sequencers.
Dragonslayer is new to this (great) game, so let's not confuse (or spoil) him!

@Dragonslayer, as a mage i recommand getting the Ring of Wizardry. It's located by a pinetree at the friendly arms in.
The tree is in the mid-bottom section of the map, and the ring is under a stone near the tree.
Near it, there will be a small darker dot that's where the ring is.
The coordinates are X 2555, Y 3759. In the config menu you can set a key to display coordinats.

Good luck!

Yeah I know its not :P

Help and a little (offtopic) discussion inserted can't be too detrimental to his gaming can it?

Your reputation will get better.
Its nice to have a good reputation (cheaper in stores)
Try doing some "good" things and dont kill any peasents etc.

I REALY recommand finding the ring, it doubles the amount of firstlevel spells you can have!

See here for help locating it.

Just explore every map so every possible dialogue u can encounter is triggered, this will include miniquests mostly, whicch will get your rep to 20 in no time (also it can be handy to check your BG manual and see what it costs to rost rep in temples, choose the most cheap way to expand rep -> at certain rep levels its like 100 gp) it might come handy. And ye, dont kill peasonts or commoners :) -6 rep ;(

Btw sorry for spell sequencer :D and i said dispel magic was a nice alternative for breach as it aint available in BG I :$ :D

"whicch will get your rep to 20 in no time"

Not everyone likes having 20 rep, I persued a nice happy 2-4 reputation. You get so rich by cloakwood, reputation shouldn't matter.
