Can I kill the king and still continue on?

I'm playing the XBOX game of the year eddition and I read that in order to get the ring that the king has you have to kill him but when I do I get that messege saying "with this charectors death you have...." I have done all the missions for him up to the piont where I get the Royal Gaurd armor. I cant figure out how to get anymore mission from him. So can anyone kinda piont me in the right direction?

Why do you want the ring?

Anyway, you'll know when you've completed the storyline of Tribunal and you can kill him after that.

How will I know? cuz right now it's giving hints that there's more missions but I can't find out how to get them.

Alright as far as I know when you've completed Tribunal and finished with Almalexia then you are free to finish of the king. It may say that you've doomed the world but I finished off Vivec like Azura says and still I doomed the world(i wanted the second wraithguard) so I don't think it should be a problem if you choose to deal with the king in w/e manner seems fit to you.
