IMHO the ebony mail is the best armor in the game... Only it's too bad that's rarely reason enough to go medium!
Personally, I think a combo of heavy/light is nice... Daedric & Dark Brotherhood is niiiice...
Heavy or Light Armor
Every armor type has its slugger. Heavy has Lord's armor, medium has the Ebony Mail, while light has the cuirass' hide. The other armor pieces are fairly even, but heavy & light -do- have a distinct advantage over medium, in both availability & AR (& looks...).

IMO, From a purely aesthetic angle, Daedric and Dark Brotherhood (maybe along with Indoril) are the nicest looking quality armours in the Official game.
I think Ebony armour makes your character resemble a giant, animated bumble bee, while Glass Armour makes your character look like an escapee from a 'nuclearized' Borg Collective

I'm glad you specified the official game--because Jeremy's Tamriel armor sets are beautiful things that surpass anything Bethsoft has produced, IMO.

Which is precisely why I downloaded his Valshea mod I also took a look at the other stuff he has made.. just gorgeous work...
Now all I need to do is figure out how to actually obtain my set of Valshea...
