Windows XP Problem

I posted this in another thread, but no responses were left, so I'm going to post it here instead:

Hello, I've been trying to get Fallout 2 to run on a new computer, it's an Intel Celeron 2.8ghz processor, running Windows XP sp1, and what is happening is that I can get to the first load screen, the: "Please Wait" classic Indian head one, but then shortly after it will black out. If anyone can offer help it would be much appreciated. I've tried many things on it, but nothing seems to work.

Sorry buddy but someone ripped you when they told you 2.8 ghz was a new computer, mines quite a bit faster than that and it's almost a year old.

First thing's first, if you can, get a refun for that PC and buy a new one, Celerons are CRAP, trust me, I opted to them for a "cheaper solution" at one time too and it was a COMPLETE waste of money, they are very slow compared to a higher priced chip (P4 or AMD) your way better off paying 25% more for a computer that will most likely last twice as long.

Secondly, update XP, I can't even get Half-Life to work on old versions of XP, plus the security on those versions is also pathetic. Update everything, including FO2, direct X, video card, anything you can think of.

Thirdly, go into fallout 2 exes properties and run it in compadibility mode for win 98.

And lastly, if all else fails, you've got a hard decision ahead of you, a VERY hard one, and that decision is - Do you wan't to use the FO2 CD for a coaster, or a frisbee? Damn that's a difficult one, I wish they put FO2 on 2 disks to make it easier for you.

Other idea: get an old computer somewhere (about 350-500 MHz and 128 MB RAM) to play old games like FO on. Shouldn't be expensive.

Try messing around with various "hardware" acceleration settings, such as sound in Direct X and graphics via proberties on the desktop etc.

Also try compatibility mode as suggested, running it in Win98 mode seems to work for some.

(Personally - I've had little to no problems running FO2 on my computer)

@Soapurb: Just because it is 2.8gHz and it is slower then yours, dosen't mean it couldn't be a new computer. Processor speed has nothing to do with the computer being new or not, you can easily buy new computers with lower "CPU speed" then that, so please watch the condesending tone.

Still Un-Working

FO2 is still not working after I downloaded and installed the Windows SP2 upgrade, I have'nt yet tried to update my activeX drivers and whatnot, could someone post the link to the most current ActiveX?

Nope, nothing has helped, I believe that I may actually have to abandon my hopes of ever playing this excellent game again... *sigh*

Misread your original post, I see you had sp1, so this makes it sound like a local problem. Windows XP usually does this type of crash when it is missing essential files (though this gives some type of error message usually) or the exe's been tampered with (though this is unlikely in your case). Is the game patched?

Nope, no patch that I know of, I'll try to reinstall it again, maybe it will help since I got the new service pack. I'll look online for game updates, or I might just go through the hassle of running my old machine.

CD Problem

Could the CD be the problem? Because I installed on my old machine, which I had run it on before, and I'm having the same problem, looks like I might have to bite the bullet and go spend the 5 bucks for a new copy...

Like I said, local problem probably caused by something silly. You can't expect a scratched cd-rom to perform as new, but even this is unlikely because the installer would have err'd while transfering. Did you do a full install?

Install

Yes, I did the Humongous install on both machines, and they both did the same thing, so that's lead me to believe that the variable between the machines (the CD) is the cause of the problem.
