Sigh @ Mindflayer lair @ underdark (spoiler)

Ok so here's my problem.
If i remember i right, there should be a fail safe on this level, with respawning mindflayers in the eastern room. Atleast they did the first time i did it.
I had done both the Beholder lair and killed that prince for his blood
and demogorgon. Time grew short on me, but i didn't realise this. As soon as i killed the Mindflayer brain there was an alarm telling me i had failed, with pharae teleporting in and me killing her ofcourse.
Now I felt I had to load, wich i did. I then did the Egg replacal etc first and then went back to mindflayer dungeon.
Now this time I had less difficulties with the Mindflayer lair, sinde alot of characters got lvl up. (first time I had to really make those collars count =] and that staff also for that matter)

To the point I Killed every mindflayer and Ullithard. And when i came to Brain door I was like uh yeah i need those mindflayers to open for me. So i thought np there spawns mindflayers in that room to the east. How wrong was I ? I even tried to rest like 20 times without noone coming.
Now i have to load and redo those 1-2 hours of work heh ? FUN! =/

IIRC you change into the Slayer, which will give you the power to open that door.

Was there not some kind of drawback turning into the slayer ?

Also, staying in Slayer form is bad for your health.
