TuTu and mods?

Post by Brynn »

Hello people,

I read several posts mentioning TuTu and different mods that provide special items or characters, but the whole thing is still not very clear for me. So

#1. Could anyone please explain me what TuTu is, and what mods are available?
#2. Are these all downloadable stuff?
#3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using these mods?
#4. Do I have to install the mod and start the game all over again or am I allowed to install it during the game?
#5. If I save a game when using a mod, is it possible to restore it later into the original game?
#6. Same for characters?
#7. How will these mods or TuTu affect my character if imported into BG II?

Thank you!

Gidday Brynn,

Firstly, I suggest reading the thread pinned above titled "Sticky: Comprehensive BG1 Mod List ~Updated 8 apr 2004~" as that details all of the currently available mods for BG1, along with links to their websites. Then, if any of your questions remain, post away. :)
Hello people,

See above.
#3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using these mods?
Some extend the game and add new areas. Some modify the base rules of the game, changing it into a completely different style. Whether these are advantages or disadvantages is personal opinion. Some are buggy and may crash your game.
#4. Do I have to install the mod and start the game all over again or am I allowed to install it during the game?
Depends on the mod. Read the readme associated with each mod.
#5. If I save a game when using a mod, is it possible to restore it later into the original game?

Generally not, especially if the mod changes base rules, or you are in an area not present in the core game.
#7. How will these mods or TuTu affect my character if imported into BG II?
It again depends on the mod itself. I have heard that there are problems when moving a TuTu BG1 PC to BG2 SoA, but I am not sure. Check out the relevant forums for the mods themselves.

Cheers mate,

Thank you, Hairy! (I hope I'm not talking to a giant tarantula :p )

I'd like to ask about your experiences with these mods - as the game may crash (mentioned above), or characters may not be allowed to import into BG II, it sounds a bit risky to me... Is there anybody who encountered similar problems?

Nope, no giant tarantulas here. Although the Sydney Funnel Web eats those for breakfast anyway!

I haven't used many of the BG1 mods. My BG1 (vanilla) Bard is now in BG2 with a bunch of mods installed, and I haven't had anything go wrong so far. Once she was done, I installed the Ease of Use mod, which has not given me any problems at all.

The important thing to remember (IMHO) is to only download and use active mods - i.e./ mods with strong community support, or where the developer of the mod is still working on it. Check the websites of the mods you want to use, and make sure that their forums have recent and active posts. Or if this is not the case, at least the bugs within the mod are well documented (and there are work-arounds for them present somewhere in the readme or on the website).

Cheers mate,
TGHO

I visited the site and found a lot of amazing stuff there :) I also read in one of the readmes that some mods exclude each other, so it's not a way to install all of them without selection. I think I'll make a list of these exclusions, might be useful for others, too.

Thanks again!

Oh, I'd definitely install the Baldurdash fixes, as they are not really mods, but are actually patches which fix some remaining problems within the game.

Have fun! :)

Original Saga is, IIRC, all of the three BG games (BG 1, BG 2 SoA, BG 2 ToB) rolled into one, using the BG 2 interface. It's structured differently to Tutu. But I don't know if it is an active mod anymore, I haven't seen anything on it for a while.

I'd try Tutu, to be honest, as there is a very active and supportive community over at http://www.pocketplane.net, and the forums there seem to be quite reasonable.

Cheers,

Maybe this can help...

Tutu is a conversion mod that lets you play BG1 with all the BG 2 engine advantages but I guess you already knew that. About the mods (items, characters, etc.) that are supported in Tutu you should read the Tutu page carefully. Also this is a thred about problems with Tutu installation that shows the steps you should take to install the mod smoothly.

http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/showt ... post546743

I finished BG 1 and TOSC with Tutu and got a 9 lvl Inquisitor with very good stats and items out of it. Now I'm in BG 2 and I must say that all the boring of the Tutu installation and tweaking was worth it. My basic rule about other mods was that item and classes tweaking were best left for the TutuTweak mode and only after applying it I've installed the rest of the mods. Also I used mostly Weidu mods as those have better conflict checks. Anyway this is the list of programs, patches, mods and tweakes I've used and it worked fine for me and a few friends of mine who tried it:

For BG 1

BGTalesUS5512.exe
ImprovedBAMs-v2.exe
BG1NPC-v6.exe
BG1NPCMusic-v2.exe
BG1FixPack11.exe
BG1TOSCGameTextUpdate11.exe

For BG 2

BGII-ThroneofBhaal_Patch_26498_ENGLISH.exe
BG2ThroneOfBhaalFixPack112.exe
BG2ThroneOfBhaalGameTextUpdate12.exe

Tutu

bg1tutu_v4.exe
Tutufix_v5.exe
Tutusounds_v1.exe
start_screens.zip
Tutu_Tweaks-v7.exe

Remember that both BG 1 and BG 2 need to be installed in full, for BG 1 meaning that you should select custom install, check all the modules (ignore the "not enough space" warning) and install.

@thenenea
Have you experienced any problems with moving a PC between BG1 and BG2 whilst using Tutu? I've read on the Tutu forums that there are some problems, but people are pretty vague.

Also, can you play BG2 with Tutu installed? My understanding was that the Tutu install consumed some of the BG2 files, and to play BG2 you had to do a separate install, or uninstall Tutu...?

Thanks!

@Brynn
Whoops! Sorry. :) Changing it!

Transition and revert...

I have installed Tutu specifically for playing BG1 so playing BG 2 in the same timeframe was not an issue for me. The Tutu documentation however state that you cannot play BG 2 while Tutu is installed. Theoretically you could uninstall Tutu and play BG 2 afterwards but I have encountered some serious problems afterwards (game crashes and missing descriptions for some items + some weird dialogue corruption) so after finishing BG 1 with Tutu I recommand reinstalling BG 2 in order to continue the adventure. Also I presume that you'll want to install some mods for BG 2 too and that would make things even more problematic if you have some "remains" from the BG 1 mods in BG 2 so I really think it's worth the trouble to reinstall BG 2 to avoid later issues (I made it into the Underdark only to descover that I was getting BG 1 dialogues and couldn't pass Ush Natha).
