Heya gotnho,
You get your stuff back towards the end of Chapter One, before heading into the Underdark. On the third level of Undermountain there is a huge room with a ton of drow and their allies. After a massive fight, you'll find a Drow Chest which contains all your stuff.
But as I said, you'll find some pretty cool gear before then. Some of your stuff will not be worth keeping by that point.
Cheers,
TGHO

That depends, you know... especially if you repeatedly chestloaded in your previous playthrough, then most of your old items will be quite on par with what you get in the HotU1 chapter. But as I said, you'll find some pretty cool gear before then. Some of your stuff will not be worth keeping by that point.
And I agree, having your equipment stolen is one of the most infuriating stunts that the developers ever pull on you. Especially item-heavy classes like fighters and rogues will really feel some genuine hate there... I still know that back when I first played hotu (with a fighter), my wrath drove me to rushing down into undermountain like a true force of nature.
On the other hand, it's a nice move to get you immersed, of course. Talk about grim motivation...

I don't chestload, it seems too much like a waste of time. Some of the really nice items I remember are the talking sword (my Elf Wizard loved it, and it was much better than the ordinary +2 blade she was wielding after SoU), several suits of +4 armour, and something my monk picked up which was really cool (although it slips my mind right now).
I think it depends on the class you are playing - there is some really nice treasure to be found scattered about.
Cheers,
TGHO

My guess is that you are looking in the wrong area.
The chest with all your items - if I recall right - should be in the area (just?) before Halaster(sp?) - where you fight a large contigency of drow with ballistas.
Make sure you are in this area (walkthrough)

Yeah, as Xandax says, the Drow Chest with your stuff is in the area prior to Halaster. It's a black chest, up against one of the large natural pillars at the back of the room, near the entrance way to where you rescue Halaster.
If you mouse over it, it should come up as "Drow Chest" or the like. Make sure you get your stuff BEFORE talking with Halaster!
Cheers,
TGHO
