I used to play BG a lot until I grew bored waiting for WoW to come out so I'm about to reinstall it. I was just wondering which of these charecter builds is better since I've never multi-classed before. I'm going to go elf as my race and dual weilding longswords as my weapon/style.
Kensai/Swashbuckler
Mainly becuase of traps and the swashy AC bonus is good since if I'm going to be a Kensai/Swashbuckler all I can wear is leather right?
Fighter/Mage
Mainly becuase I can cast spells and be a tank. I was thinking of wearing up to chain for lower miss-cast rate (does armor even interfere with miss-cast?)
Lastly a sawshbucler/cleric
Becuase then I don't need to get Anomen in my party becuase
1) He is really annoying becuase of his ego, and
2)Becuase his name makes me think that's Imoen after getting a sex change *shudders*

All round they seem ok choices, but there are a few details you should be aware of.
"Kensai/Swashbuckler
Mainly becuase of traps and the swashy AC bonus is good since if I'm going to be a Kensai/Swashbuckler all I can wear is leather right?"
Well as a Kensai no armour is wearable, however with UseAnyItem HLA you will be able to put on anything, so really its a good character, although with theivery you will want to stick with leather. - Also Swashy and Kensai both get ar bonuses so its super nice. I'd advise you dual class at levl 13. Hmm, on second thought this character can't work. You could be a Kensai dualed to thief, or a swashy dualed to fighter. But no kensai/swash. You could mutli and use SK to make a Kensai/thief or fighter/swash too.
"Fighter/Mage
Mainly becuase I can cast spells and be a tank. I was thinking of wearing up to chain for lower miss-cast rate (does armor even interfere with miss-cast?)"
I'd go with a Kensai/Mage, dualed at levl13. Its better than multi, although you want to be an elf. You can start as an elf, and when you hit levl 13 SK to a human then dual, then sk back to elf.
- "wearing up to chain for lower miss-cast rate" With chain you can't cast at all. It would be very silly to do, a miss cast rate is a silly thing, as a mage you can get great ar. use mirror image, ghost armour, blur, protection from evil, all low level spells. Leaving you very low. But a straight fighter/mage isn't really the best character, or most fun, I really recommend kensai mage.
"Lastly a sawshbucler/cleric"
great character, its fun to play too, check out the forum, theres a whole thread on this character. Nice choice.
"then I don't need to get Anomen in my party" - Anomen isn't the only cleric in the game, theres also Viconia, also theres the 2 druids, Jaheria and Cernd, who do a similar job. Also theres Aerie.
So really, you gotta consider wether its worth picking the class tjust for your hatred of Anomen (a nice character really) A better reason for picking the character is that you don't need to have some lame ass pain in the butt thief on your team.
Anyway, good luck.
I think swashy/cleric would be the best, although some SK will be needed to make it.

Ok thank you for your input. I haven't played BG in a while so I forgot what you can multi with and what you can not, but i have plenty of time since my BG II disc 2 is corrupt I just need to wait till chistmas. I really don't care if I'm human or elf, I just perfer elf becuase in RL I have strange angled ears so I can relate and that +1 sword attack bonus helps in the beginning. Umm whats SK?

Shadow Keeper - It's a tool that lets you edit your characters, and can be used to create all kinds of technically illegal combinations.
Creating multi-class characters with a kit is probably the simplest - just create a single-class with the kit, then go into SK and change the class.
As me0w mentioned, you can also change your race, which means any race can be any (valid) multi or dual class option.
What's more difficult to do is getting two kits or an invalid multi/dual class (like Fighter/Sorceror for example). Things like that require a bit of faking in SK, but often are possible to a certain extent.
For example, your Kensai/Swashbuckler - just create a Fighter/Swashbuckler and a Kensai for reference. Then copy the Affects and Innate abilities from the Kensai to your F/S, and effectively you have a K/S (minus the Kensai armour and weapon restrictions).

Muahahhahaha now I can become a kensai/mage that is not human. Thanks glen, I guess I'll be a Kensai/mage since my forum name is Cowled (as in the cowled wizards) Kensai (as in the fighter class kit).

You could also try a Swashbuckler/Mage Multiclass (not dual-class).
You'll get :
- A pretty good thac0
- Mages spells
- Both High Level Abilities pools (If you have ToB installed)
- Thievery skills (So you won't need to bring Jan nor Yoshimo/Imoen with you)
- Dual-Wielding possible (A Swashy/Mage can have 3 stars in D. wield)
- You can use most weapons.
Drawbacks :
- Your Thac0 will not be as high as a Kensai/Mage's Thac0
- No backstabbing
- Less HP than a Kensai/Mage
- Weapon profiencies limited to 2 stars.
Another class that can be poweful and fun to play : Kensai/Thief. A Kensai/Thief, with his Kai ability activated, can backstabb for ALOT of damages (Not as high as an Assassin, but almost).
