Last night I thought I would try to find the best thief since I just read all the posts about what races make the best thieves...I tried em all and when I made a half-orc thief with 19 str and 19 con...I was somewhat impressed right away but holy shit his first backstab with crit did a rocking 80 points of damage with just the katana from the chest in irenicus dungeon i cannot imagine what he would be capable of once he have celestial fury....so for my vote half-orcs = Powerful thief.

and how a half-orc is able to hide in shadows he IS a bit to the tall and fat and big and ugly and wierd size. the size of him (not to mencion that he is butt ugly) give him away wend pickpoquet.

I'm not sure what you're referring to...I see no reason why he would not be able to pick pocket's if you spent points on it which would be silly anyway since there are plenty other npcs that can fill that role...if you were making a half-orc thief then you would be going for powerful backstabs that should drop most any foe...not for wimpy pick pocketing...
Maybe he doesnt pick pocket em, but instead grabs them by the ankle and shakes they're loot out

Why did you bother with 19 Con (there is no bonus to a Thief above 16)? Putting points in Dex and Cha would be much better.

yeah the damage is awesome but...man! A thief is quite more than just a 'backstab-machine'. Every talented gnomish engineer could build such a machine that beats your Half-Ork in backstabs, wits and charm...just to name a few...

Half-orc backstabs are awesome early in the game with their 19 strength, but after a bit, anyone can buy the girdle of giant strength. Kinda makes their effectiveness less appealing, knowing any thief can have those stats.

True but they also have a con of 19 which means they have a more hps in total...and they have a higher saves vs death i believe is what that modifies..not sure till i look at the manual again
Yes, but try a girdle of frost giant strength. Str 21. There are three different girdles of giant strength inthe game, plus gauntlets of ogre power. Seems a waste to go for 19 str on a half-orc thief when there are so many ways to make up for it with another race of thief. These are only powergaming problems, though. I agree with some of the other comments above, from a roleplaying perspective, half-orc thieves should be few and far between.
Also, Con of 19 doesn't help thieves' hit points. 16 with +2hp's is max

Try a Half-Orc Fighter/Theif. That's a good class, especially without the xp cap. Just think, extra hp's for 19 con, hit more often with lower thac0, plus more armor (and maybe weapon???) choices. Plus you can save your girdle with 19 str for someone else.

give him as little in strength as possible if you are in a party Jahiera, Minsc and youshi can easily get out of the doungeon draging you along, then it is a matter of stealing and finding money till you have appx. 19,000 gp and then buy the girdle of hill giant strength. CHA you don't need if you do use ring of human inf. this way you will be able to max him out in all.

In pen & paper I always play a halfling thief, it just makes the most sense. Recently I found out that the game doesn't take into account the modifiers for race to your thief abilities...and the computer doesn't care or know what you look like, you're "human" size...that's it.
In "real" D&D I used disquise to play a kid to blend in with the common folk, but here it doesn't matter...nice for a change I guess?
