Level squatting means that you don't level up every time you reach the exp. lev. required, but you level up after you have gained exp. for more levels.
This way you keep the average level of your party low and you gain more exp. for every kill.
The downside is that you tend to play with a weaker party part of the game; also when you level up you take all the levels in a single class; finally when you level up you are at a higher average level and from that time on you start to gain less exp. per kill.
A good way of proceeding is to squat only certain chars of your party (fighters and mages), while leveling up more regularly sorcerers and clerics.
Sorc. and clerics are strong depending on their spells, while a fighter of lower lev than average can still be effective, while for mages isn't a point to rush because you wan't find scrolls at the same rate.
To Silverdragon: I don't mean that immunity to fear is pointless, but that is not vital at least for big part of normal game; monsters with auras are high level and you start to find them very late in the game or in HoF, not in the first 3-4 chapters. Also there are items that protect you from panic and spells that do the same, so you shouldn't have problems for good part of the game. While having every time higher spells definetly helps.
But the game is good because you can customize you char.s to any style and have fun, so any option is good as long as you enjoiy the game.
Best race for sorceror
The reason why I don't level squat offen, is because, like you said. You play with a weaker party. Now I finished the game, all my characters were level 17-18 more or less. 16 for the ECL ones. Now if I restart the game, about half of it will win me no exp, while the end game will barely win my one or two levels. Thus reaching 19-20 more or less. Now, the problem I have is I get angry that it's too easy to do. But if I activate heart of winter I get my ass kicked.

@lompo: ok - have to admit that I've installed the "Undead Targos"-Mod - but "horror" seems to be one of the favorite enemy-caster spells at low level !
...and if you finish BS early you will be confronted with many gelugons & co. !
...so until now I haven't missed the higher spell level - but things might be a little bit easier if I would have it - but battles aren't that hard eitherway in normal mode !
...and btw. I also have a wizard in my party
