Questions on Wizard Feats

Post by MIKKYLD »

I am running a wiz/rogue (currently 2R 8W) and intending to take spell focus and Gr spell focus in Evocation as my next 2 feats since I mainly use M Missiles, Fireballs and Ice Storm which are all evocation.

But as I read the description of the feats, it says they provide a +4 to the DC versus the opponent's save. And MMissile and I Storm do not allow saves. So I assume I am right in thinking the feat will not help those spells at all?????

Perhaps there are other positive effects to the focus than are listed in the book???

In either case, are there future spells in the Evocation school which would make the tougher save a good thing to have? Or should I look elsewhere for my feats?

well, i rarely play spellcasters, but i think feats empower and maximize spell sound better than focusing

I think you are right in that focus on evoation will not help Magic Missiles or ice storm, becase I dont think there arre saves allowed in those spells, but I think it will effect fireball making it harder to dodge. I would go with empower and maximized spelll feats instead though because with evocation spells, more damage is better. if they are saving against your spells, just finish off with bunch of maximized magic missiles

SF and GSF Illusion, Necromancy or even transmutation are a lot more usefull then Evocation because a lot of good Evocation spells dont allow saves which makes added DC pointless.

Fantasmal killer is a level 4 insta killer thats illusion for example, as is wierd at level 9. Wail of the banshee alone is worth taking spell focus in Necromancy for, few spells benefit a lot from Evocation mainly chain lightning lightning and fireball.

Thanks

I appreciate the answers - I will be doing maximize first and if I do focus it will be in an area more impacted by focusing.

This is a bit late but in general, without SoU/HotU, it is a good idea to take spell focus evoc since all you main offensive spells are evoc (usually empowered/maxed fireball, cone of cold and chain lightning). However if you do have SoU it's spell focus Necromancy all the way for Horrid Wilting and Wail since both Firebrand and IGMS (the two best evocation spells) have no saves. Of course you won't be able to cast emp/maxed spells till later in the game and so it's worth taking SF series earlier on.
both Firebrand and IGMS (the two best evocation spells) have no saves.
IGMS has no save but in the updated version (1.64) firebrand now has a reflex spell, since doing 90 fire with a maximised firebrand is to powerful (Though IGMS is even more powerful)
