I used to have no problems to defeat him, except for the fact that the party is a bit hard. Have you played pro or con the Thieves? Cause that could explain something.
Flesh to stone ain't permanent, it seems.

Just don't steal the boots and everything is fine (including the plot).

Unkillable means you won't get him down to zero HP, to be precise. If you want to kill him anyway and break the plot: Shapechange to Mind Flayer (preferably hasted and/or using whirlwind attack) and kill him by Int drain.

Gosh, I honestly didn't know you could do that. Doesn't his +10 sword kill everything in his path, up to and including mind flayer?

Not if you're protected against magical weapons.
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

well should be done with the shadow theifs I help them to get to spellhold so I don't think i am on a plot breaking path but it would explain why I can't bring him down .. I cant cast 9 level spells yet so I have to wait with the mindflayer but nice advice I am defently going to true that one when i can .. :D

I don't understand; if you're back from the Underdark Arkanis Gath is not supposed to show up when you attack Linvail... because Linvail is, at that point, not important to the plot anymore.

Arkanis is impossible to kill. I realized this after watching him take 1k+ damage and still standing.

The key to taking Renal's boots is to kill him in a place where Arkanis cannot show up. You want to use a mind control spell. Once it hits, you can drag him outside of the guild-base. Find a deserted area, preferably a basement or something and finish him off there.

If you happened to have picked up a few mind control collars, you can wrap this up with one try.

Also, just a warning, after you take kill Renal, dont go back to the guildhouse. Arkanis will kill your whole party. :)

Not sure if Arkanis ever stops protecting his superiors btw. If he's not the unkillable version, he should be toast within seconds. But it's the unkillable Arkanis that tends to show up if you attack certain characters.

About killing him:

He's got a "hardcoded" item that gives him one HP no matter what, so from the HP point of view, he cannot be killed. But since an AD&D character dies when an attribute is zero and this function is implemented, you can kill him with Int drain. Not sure if it was Userunfriendly or Bruce Lee who came up with this method some years ago, but it works.

.... or let Haer'Dalis use his swords... Dexternity drain will also do the trick I suppose. And yes, Phantom Lord, it's a VERY old trick! -in the good old days :D ;)
... -in the good old days :D ;)
Indeed, I gladly remember such great inventions like the perfect dual wild combo: Rift Device plus Ring of the Ram, used by a simulacrum - and 99 other ways to get the best out of spells and items. Lots of stuff to be found in those old posts, keyword "cheese". ;)

Alternatively, adding a Time Stop prior to the Shapechange: Mind Flayer will guarantee that you hit him every time, and thus he will be certain to die.
