Rating Scale for Spells

Post by Archon of SFL »

Fellow adventurers,

As I learn the game, I’m going through all of the spells, wizard’s first then priest’s, and trying to rate them on a scale of 1 to 5. I’ve come up with the following scale that I’d like you’re opinion on:

1 - Copy to your spell book or sell the scroll. You'll probably never use it and it's not worth wasting scroll storage space.

2 - Copy to your spell book. May be needed occasionally, but you'll have time to memorize and rest.

3 - Not needed in memory every day, but useful to have on hand at any given moment. When you need it, you’re going to need it right away, so you better have a scroll.

4 - Copy to your spell book and keep at least one copy memorized. You’ll use it often enough that scrolls will get expensive and hard to find.

5 - Copy to your spell book and keep as many copies memorized as you possibly can.

What do you think of this scale? What changes would you make and what would you keep?

I like your scale. It's pretty good. With some spells, i wasnt sure whether to rate it a 1 or 2, or 4 or 5 for some good ones, but that's a matter of opinion i guess. Still, you may want to consider narrowing down the description for each rating and eliminating any chances of spells falling into 2 or more ratings.

This is how i would make my scale, from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. It's a bit different from yours, but you can compare it or something. :)

5 rating:
This is the best of the best in your arsenal of spells. This is what you think makes the game so easy. This is your family jewel.

4 rating:
A strong, solid, stand-alone spell. Spells with massive combo-potential also goes here.

3 rating:
Situational spells. Not the most solid of spells, but may be your best choice in the right situation.

2 rating:
These are your 2nd best choices. These are the Chromatic Orbs that you would otherwise be using had they not made Magic Missile. They're not crap. We just dont use them because we have even better spells.

1 rating:
Good for nothing but experience. Basically, you like it as much as you like Nalia. (well, maybe more so.)

I think we're talking from the same page here. With my 1-5 descriptions, I was basiclly categorizing the spells by what action I would take when I found the scroll.

The first question I always had was "do I keep the spell or just sell the scroll because the spell is so uselesss that I'll never have a need for it".

Assuming I decided to keep a spell, my next question is whether I think I'll be using it on a regular basis. If the answer is yes (Magic Missle for instance), then I go ahead and copy to the spell book.

If the answer is no, then I'm faced with the final question: when I finally need this spell, will I need it right away, or will I have time to memorize it. If the answer is right away, then I keep the scroll in a case or in the big bag (even if I don't have a copy in my spell book).

Make life easy:

Play a Sorcerer, and just keep copies of "Protection from Petrification," "Identify," and "Knock" on hand. ;)

I play w/ ToB, and I usually go for the "erase/recopy for more XP" method, but since it's really cheesey, I'm going to abandon it when I get that far (I'm doing the whole series w/ the same character now, and I'm just getting to the city of Baldur's Gate in the first game).

Theres are multiple multi-page discussions about the best spell combos... indeed there is a cheesisest spell combo website that gives you some fairly overpowering combos. Hence dicatating what spells to memorize. Classic example is the project image cheesing etc.
