I think the potion dude is one of your (former) students. He's got to survive to make it to potion-maker, though.

it takes a bit... be patient, or trigger him manually

It took a full week for me, once.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I heard that you only get the potion maker if ALL your apprentices survive AND you haven't fought any of the cowled wizards.

What is most important is that he will not appear if you've fought or killed any of the Cowled Wizards (but it's so fun and rewarding smacking Zallanora!)

Here, let me do you a favor and actually answer the question you asked ;) When he initially shows up to ask if he can work for you, he does so in the first main room coming into the planar sphere. Once you accept that, he sets up shop in the leftmost room, the one where you create the golem during the initial quest, and where the students hung out while making their items for you.

Another important point - in the last part of the mage stronghold quest you're told to confront a mage named Agrim and imprison him using a rune you're given for that purpose. Agrim does initiate combat when you see him. If you kill him rather than imprison him, it doesn't change the xp award you get for finishing the quest, and so you might think it makes no difference, but it actually does prevent the potion making guy from signing up to work with you. You do say that you imprisoned him, but are you sure? Is it possible that the combat AI kicked in and he was dead before you managed to click the rune?

Use SK or CLUA console... if you use SK set the timer down close to 0 and he should pop up. If its CLUA console just trigger him arriving.

And yes some of your choices do determine if he arrives or not.
