Well on my first and only(so far) run through I played as a Scout/Sentinel. This gives you a nice balance. I picked mostly inate force powerd except for statis field, destroy droid, force wave, and heal. I'm not a huge fan of using buffing "spells" so I opt for the direct result powers instead. That's just my opinion, and there are plenty out there. A gould mage however would almost have to be half Consular just for the force points, but then again you can really do wahtever you want.

If you want to be a mage, you want to be consular, not a guardian. Consulars have extra innate defense which allows them to survive the occasional close encounter.

Choose whatever starting class you like, but remember that mages should have decent dex, low str, high wisdom and charisma. Afterall, your force powers, especially the offensive ones tend to rely on that. Also, you are likely to choose dark force powers. So it's easier to go dark.

I know this is debatable but powers that buff up stats and speed are more for sentinels and guardians. If you want to be a mage, you want powers like insanity, force storm, choke/kill, death field. Some say that dark mages can wear armour. I disagree. A lot of darkside powers are NOT restricted by armour. But the BEST darkside powers are.

Imagine a lightside mage. U would probably end up like a paladin on Diablo, buffing up ur team-mates. Either that or pay the alignment penalty for casting darkside powers. The only spectacular battle the lightside mage will likely to have is against driods. You can try... I also will like to know how anyone can play a lightside mage...

Or you could play longer as a scoundrel to gain the Sneak Attacks, then specialize in Stasis/Insanity to do some sneaky kills.

I have never played a mage on my PC before, but I have my Jolee alongside me most of the time. He's erm.. well, my kinda guy, best of both worlds. I dun even have speed for him coz I never expect him to actually use his lightsaber. I changed his script to Jedi support and he easily outshone Bastila... and in some instances Juhani.

However, I have to include the warning that mages need to rest after long battles... they need their Force points. Melee guardians are more independent on force powers and can move from one battle to another almost instantly without stopping for a drink or to smell the flowers.
In the end, everything will be alright. If it is not alright, it is not the end.

Lightside consulars rule. Double-wielding consular that never misses stasis that costs 10 fp and has 3-18 sneak attack rules any enemy with force speed. And youll likely never run out of force points, even on the star forge.

It's quite easy to play an "offensive" Jedi using Force Wave series. It's a universal power available to either side, and damages multiple opponents, possibly stunning them. Using Wave followed up by Master Flurry or two with dual sabers (3 attacks/round) is deadly to most opponents.
