Why Kelsey before UB and Refinements, but Keto after them all?
Compared to Refinements, Keto and UB, Kelsey is relatively old.
I often heard that mod-makers advice people to install the NPC's last, but since every mod-maker suggests that when he just released his mod, I tend to disregard that advice.
From my former experience, UB and Refinements tended to get an update before I finished the game, while Kelsey hadn’t been upgraded for a while. Mod´s that are out for quite some time -and already had quite a few updates- are the ones I prefer to install first. The UB-Refinements update(s) often killed a few nasty bugs the mod had and thus I uninstalled and installed the mod's every now and then. I'm quite sure UB doesn't need an upgrade anymore, but since I always install it as one of my last mod's, that's the place it's located now. Of the entire mod list, Refinements is relatively new (thought not new compared to keto, who is actually brand-new ) and Littiz and his team are still working on an update with more features, etc. So should they, by any chance, release an update before you finish the game, you can easily install and uninstall the mod to your wishes, without having to uninstall and install every other mod.
This counts double for Keto, since she is brand-new. I'm not sure if JC made Keto entirely bugless by now, but since she is the last mod that came out on your list, I think it would be wise to install her last.
Hope that helped
p.s. I added Virtue to the install list...
If you change the 'or does it crash' part by 'does it have a few bugs', then Quest Pack has everything you mentioned. Some parts are buggy (money lending), others are poorly done and give a very unsatisfying end-result (additional shadow thief content) and again others just feel incomplete (alternative Xzar plot). The incomplete one is largely my own opinion, the first two problems are generally agreed upon, even by the creator himself.
Yeah, guess who's feeling embarassed. Quest Pack v2 is set to be all-round rather better, I hope, but v1... I really don't know what I was thinking for a good portion of it. Hopefully I can salvage my reputation based on something like Improved Oasis for now.

To me, it seems like you have a fine reputation in the modding-community anyway, so this Quest-Pack can only be a small smirk on your clean sheet. Improved Oasis is a fine mod, and your Quest Pack has the potential to be greater than that, in my opinion. Extra quests are always welcomed, plus who wouldn't want to double cross the Harpers or Shadow Thieves at least ones later on?

Heh, thanks for the support. I hope you enjoy v2 more when I release it. Anyway... I won't interrupt this thread any longer.

I'm rather glad for the input, SimDing0, and thanks for Improved Oasis. Do you have any approximate release date in mind at this point, or is it simply "when it gets done"? Reallife, after all, does have a way of interfering with coding-for-free.

I'm afraid I don't have even a vague release date to give, sorry. Looking back, I should have bugfixed v1 and released that, but now I've found myself bogged down in new content. It's coming, slowly but surely.

Well, you want Keto after Kelsey so that they can have their banter together. It's part of Keto but requires that Kelsey already be installed. And yes, the general point that Keto is in greater danger of being updated than the others is a valid one. (Although there's an AoE bugfix coming out soon as well!)

Fable, you might want to take a look at my list in the Well-Balanced mods post. I’m like you in your preferences. I don’t like cheese. I don’t like super hard battles and I don’t like mods that give you super powerful items. Nor do I like mods that give tons of experience points that ruin the normal parts of the game. The entries are not that descriptive, but they tell you if the mod will fit in the game without unbalancing it.
http://gamebanshee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27898
Besides the Darkest Day and Munch mod (and maybe a couple more), I think I have all the mods in that list installed right now and my game is pretty much balanced. Not perfect, but it has a pretty close feel to playing the original game. And there is a lot of different content that makes the game a lot different than the original without unbalancing the game. Ascention is the only really hard one I have installed.
Just a very short list of must have recommendations:
Kelsey (best fleshed out npc at this point, and yes I used a different portrait – Xan from BG1)
Planar Sphere Return mod (only if you play a mage)
Unfinished Business
Banter Packs

Can't tell you for certain, it's up to the whim of Mr. Fain.
And Ellester: Xan? Wurgh. At least use Garrick, or the modified redheaded Garrick on the Kelsey photo gallery (which was the original concept pic)

Thanks, JCompton.
Ellester, your recs make a lot of sense. The Darkest Day was actually one of the few mods I tried out, shortly after it appeared, and I immediately disliked its uber-items. So I'll definitely take your recs seriously.

Hey fable, made up your mind yet? Personally I would not go with Chloe because she starts out with a Dex of 25. Too over-powered in my view. You could SK her Dex down though, if you felt like it.
There's a lot of stuff in this thread I'm going to use next time I play through BG2. Definitely want to try Keto, when the next version comes out. She seems quite cool.
Fable, you'll have to let us know what you end up choosing to install. Good luck!

If you're asking which NPCs I'm probably going to import, I'd say at this point it's looking very good for Kelsey and Keto.
Thanks for all the advice, guys!

LOL! I like Xan
Anyway, it’s a wizard portrait that can easily be a sorcerer portrait. And the portrait is of him casting a spell, which I like. Oh, it’s also the Red Xan, I think HellKittyDan did the modification, so he looks a little cooler than his purple look in BG1.

Doing a full reinstall at the moment. Based on the advice I've collected here and in other threads, here's what I'm thinking about the various mods. I'm not including NPC mods. Note that I know I'm prejudging some of these, which is why I'm posting this, so I can be told when I'm just wrong
---------------------------
Absolutely will install in any BG2 mod install. By all accounts, simply too good and/or uncontroversial not to include:
Ascension
Oversight
Unfinished Business
Banter Pack
Item Upgrade
Ease of Use (except for concurrent romances)
Improved Oasis 2
----------------------------
The following are potential, but not must-have mods. I'll be trying some of them on this runthrough. Here's my commentary on what I'm having second thoughts about, based on what I've read or experienced, and these are the ones I'd most appreciate feedback on.
Ajoc's Mini-Mod, Black Rose Part I: Market Prices, Leutian's Mini Mod, Rahul Kanakia's Potion Quest - As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as too many (quality) quests. I know nothing of the above quests and whether they're worth installing or not or if their rewards are overpowered. Any comments on these would be appreciated.
Flirt Pack - I tried this one. A -great- idea, and the implementation is terrific, no bugs either that I can find, but the actual content (as far as I've taken it) is a bit lacking for my tastes. So far I've only tried it with Aerie, and I hate to say it, but her "subtly swaying her hips" has absolutely gotten on my last rawest nerve. If it's so damn subtle, why has it become the first thing I notice every freaking time she walks up to me? Argh!!!! It tries so hard (and so repeatedly) to invoke that mental image that it's just jarring every time I see it now. The content for her has also seemed a bit shallow - her responses a bit trite. I'd like to see a little more character development, maybe even a vestige of a sense of humor or (innocent) playfulness, rather than umpteen "You're so nice to me!" and "You make me feel so much better!" swoons. To be fair, though, I do have to add that due to bugs with other mods that forced me to stop my game I never got to experience the flirt pack after the romance with her was in full swing. Maybe it gets better later? I'll probably reinstall it again just to try it the whole way through, and I'll just force myself to ignore the relentless teeth-grating hip swaying.
Planar Sphere Mod - From what I've read, it sounds really good. I'm going to install it for this run-through, and will report when I know more. But looking at the forum, it does appear there's some bugs left to be ironed out. I haven't tried it yet, but if it lives up to it's promise (and the items/spells aren't too overpowered) it may move into the "must install" category (if you're playing a mage, anyway). If it -is- definetly overpowered, do let me know, please.
Planar Sphere Return Mod - distinct from the above mod (though repeatedly confused with it, including on this thread), all it does is add teleport capability to the planar sphere and back, and thus is just convenient. Really no reason not to install it if you're playing a mage, from what I can see. I'll be installing it, since yes, I'll be playing a mage.
G3 Anniversary Mod - I played this one all the way through. Very fun little mod that adds great flavor to the inns throughout Amthlatka. Would absolutely be in my Must-Install list if it weren't for a bug that breaks the final reward portion of the quest. When that's fixed, I'll move it to the must-install list.
Redemption/The Longer Road: They sound neat, but I really don't know much about them. I'm going to hold off on installing these, and experience Ascension without them, and if I play again after that I'll add these two. What's the concensus on these? Is there any reason to play Ascension without them first? I'm also guessing that Jon Irenicus is going to be a pretty massively overpowered NPC, but I'm open to be convinced otherwise.
Tactics - Ritual. I was looking forward to this quest at one point, but then read too many comments to the effect that the plot is "intentionally" shallow, and the rewards are overpowered, so probably won't bother trying it.
Tactics (Guarded Compound, Twisted Rune, Improved Undead, Improved Crypt King, Improved Mae'var, Gnome Illusionist, Improved Small Teeth Pass, Improved North Forest, Improved Marching Mountains): These are the primary ones out of Tactics that I'm planning on installing. I still have concerns about them, but in some cases the "improved" fight seems to be the only way of fixing some bugs, such as Mae'var not being able to cast spells and the Twisted Rune guys not using their equipment. I'd love it if there were fixes for just those problems that didn't come with extra cheese. Since that doesn't seem to be an option, these are the ones I'll be installing this time through, and crossing my fingers that they won't unbalance my game. Oh, please, if any of these provide really overpowered rewards or overly masochists challenges, please do let me know soon so I can avoid them. I don't want to unbalance this game.
Tactics (Torgal, Lich in the Docks, Tougher Kangaxx and Guardians, Random City Encounters, Random Wilderness Encounters, Improved Golems, Improved Mind Flayers, Smarter Beholders, Smarter Vampires, Slightly Tougher Demons) This is my list of those I'm NOT planning on installing these this time through, but I could be convinced otherwise - I just suspect from what I've read that they will unbalance my game. The list of Tactics mods I'm pretty much -not- open to be convinced to try are listed below, as I'm pretty much positive they're game unbalancing from what I've read.
Quest Pack - As discussed here, great potential not realized in the first version, but which may well move into the must-install list once version 2 is rolled out (someday) I'll probably install it for this run-through just so I can clean up the Shadow Thieves in Chapter 6, and so I can give more informed suggestions for improving it in v2
Rogue Rebalancing - Chosen of Cyric encounter. I hear this one really is quite good, well balanced, and should be considered a must-install. I'll be trying it in the game I'm about to go through, and will report if I agree.
Refinements: Eh. I know a lot of people consider this one a must have, but from the readme, several of the HLA's seem both overpowered and not well balanced to me. In particular, I can't see why anyone would -ever- want to play the Undead Hunter paladin kit with it, as all paladins get HLA's that make the Undead Hunter's abilities redundant, and the HLA specific to Undead Hunters looks downright lame (if I want to "repulse undead", I'll have my cleric turn undead). That seemed so obvious to me from reading the readme that it made me suspicious of the rest.
Virtue: It seems like a neat idea, and I'm ALL for increasing the roleplay aspect of these games, but I was concerned in noting that attacking a particular red dragon in Watcher's Keep is considered an action that can make Paladins fall. The notion being that you have no overt reason to attack him, so you must just be bigoted against red dragons, and therefore not worthy of being a paladin? Sorry. Not buying it, especially for a Cavalier. That's why I'm skipping this one.
House Of Sim (other than Improved Oasis 2, which is a must-install): Nothing wrong with it, just nothing there I'm particularly interested in either.
-----------------------------
Never plan on installing again because they appear designed for the overpowered munchkin crowd, or can simply break the rest of the game by adding too much content/xp/loot too early on:
The Darkest Day
Check The Bodies
Shadows Over Soubar
Ruad
Improved Anarg (the helm seems overpowered/unbalanced to me)
Tactics (Illych, Bohdi, Irenicus, Smarter Mages, Sahuagin City, Acid Kensai, Red Badge, Tougher Kangaxx and Guardians, Always Toughest Random Spawns, Tougher Druid Grove, Tougher Fire Giants, Improved Dragons) - these I'm convinced by various comments that I just don't want, they're just too cheesy to be fun for anyone but a devoted masochist, or provide overpowered rewards.
------------------------------
Any comments/rebuttals are welcome. And no offense at all intended to those whose work I may have criticized - I'm sure there's many people out there who would love your work, and many people who have no problem at all with what I consider overpowered rewards or masochist battles, they're just concerns in my book. I'm on a quest to flesh out a really good "middle of the road" install list for the player for whom an extra challenge is good but balance is a concern and who aren't masochists. Heck, I may even draw up a walkthrough that includes them once such a list is firmed up.

I've got some time off over xmas, and I'm going to do some messing around with the Flirt Pack/ Banter Pack issue we discussed. Sorry I am taking a while with that. I'll get onto it!
Cheers,
TGHO

Great to hear it gets more varied later on, hehehe The bit I'm talking about that drives me crazy actually precedes the point where I suspect any random roll is happening - each flirt pack Aerie banter begins with a parenthesied (is that a word?) action where Aerie "approaches you, hips swaying subtly" or something to that effect, and THEN you get the random bit where she actually says something. Overall I still like the mod, and of course I know you weren't trying to hurt me on purpose, hehehe. It's just that after seeing her "hips swaying subtly" for the 100th time, I now have visions of her hips subtly knocking the other party members halfway across the Promenade as she approaches me...
The Great Hairy:
Yeah, alright, you've convinced me, I'm just going to avoid Tactics altogether. As I said before, I would -love- if someone would come up with a tamer version of Tactics where they could just fix the really egregious stuff, like Mae'var not being able to cast his spells, or the Twisted Rune guys not using the equipment they're carrying, or making the Beholders smart enough not to just outright kill themselves on a Shield of Balduran (even if it is kinda fun, heheh). Basically, a version of Tactics that reasonably improved the AI without resorting to any cheese (and cheese does include -omniscient- AI). Some of these mods make the game easier, so I really wouldn't mind a counterbalancing mod to make them all a bit tougher - but I guess I'll have to settle for just the tougher fights in TOB from Ascension and Oversight.
Anyways, while installing, I discovered that the Ajoc Minimod considers itself an addon to The Darkest Day, and doesn't say if it can be installed without it, so I'm scratching that one for this test run.
Therefore, for my current run, I'm going to install the following (and in the following order):
1) SOA
2) TOB
3) TOB Patch
4) TOB Fixpack
5) Bonus Merchants
6) Ascension
7) Oversight
8) Unfinished Business
9) G3 Anniversary Mod (I'll just do the quest and wait on triggering the finale, for the heck of it)
10) Improved Oasis II
11) Rogue Rebalancing - Chosen of Cyric Encounter only
12) Quest Pack (just to help debug/give suggestions for v2)
13) Rahul Kanakia's Potion Quest (I'll let ya know if it's any good)
14) Leutian's Miniquest (ditto)
15) Black Rose Part I: Market Prices (ditto)
16) Revised Hell Trials (ditto)
17) Planar Sphere Mod (ditto)
18) Planar Sphere Return Mod
19) JPS Portraits (I like their Aerie and Nalia pics better, and their second Jaheira one is nice too)
20) Banter Pack
21) Flirt Pack
22) Item Upgrade
23) Ease of Use (except concurrent romances)
(I know, I didn't mention Revised Hell Trials before cause I forgot about it - but I like the theme, I agree with the justification, and from the Readme it seems both balanced and a good way to customize and individualize each PC we take through the game. I wonder why more people don't discuss it? Is it notoriously buggy or something?)
I have a lot of free time these days, so it shouldn't take me that long to play through the whole thing. I'll let you all know how I liked this configuration, and if any of the above is unbalanced. buggy, or just not fun IMHO

For the record, during the above install, I got a bunch of parsing and other errors during my install of the Planar Sphere Mod. Since I'd rather deal with this sort of thing -now- than after I've gone halfway through the game, I've restarted the whole install procedure but moving that mod up to be the very first install after the fixpack. I'm also going to move Ease of Use to be directly after Unfinished Business, and I'm going to avoid putting in components that I don't really need (like "Happy").
EDIT: ARRRRGH... I just did what I said, reinstalled SOA and TOB, patch and fixpack, and then installed the Planar Sphere Mod right after the fixpack... and got the exact same list of parse warnings during install that I did when it was like #15 on my list. Sigh. I'll be heading over to the forum and looking it up now. Well, if nothing else, they were enough to make me waste about 3 hours :/
One other point - during this whole thing, I found a link (at the BlackWyrmLair website) to the TOB patch #26499, which is apparently a BETA patch that was meant to fix a slow loadtime problem with the "final" patch #26498. Last time I went through the game a couple of months ago, I did indeed have pretty slow load times (approaching a full minute sometimes). Anyone know if there's any problems with that beta patch? Oddly, it's only a 4.1 meg download while #26498 is 8 megs, and that's odd enough that I'm not going to risk it, but I'm curious if anyone knows anything about it.
