Abandoning Party Members in Spellhold (Spoilers)
I went into Spellhold with 5 NPC’s in my party (wasn’t really thinking ahead given that I knew I was trying to get Imoen back). Once I met up with Imoen and she asked to join, I had to kick a member (Nalia) out and leave them in the dungeon. Is the poor dear lass stuck there now? Will she ever get out and will I ever be able to meet her again. Nothing romantic on this one, I just feel guilty about stranding her at the asylum.

I know if you leave Imoen behind, she says she'll be able to make it back to the Copper Coronet. You have to say the right dialouge to make her leave, rather than stay. Perhaps there was a dialouge choice to say, go to Copper Coronet or go back to the castle. Good luck.
In memorian: Fiona; Ravager; Lestat; Phreddie; and all of those from the 1500 incident. Lest we forget.

I once decided to drop Jan when taking Imoen into the party. He mentioned being at his home if I ever needed him. Can't say I checked on that, though.

In Spellhold (and the Underdark, and Sahuagin city for that matter), if you drop a character, they're supposed to stay right where you leave them. Of course, if you drop them, it would be impossible to get them back without cheating.
Imoen is the exception to this rule, as she'll leave for the Copper Coronet (and get there safely) if you do not accept her into your party, or if you drop her after accepting her.

The only characters that can return of their own will from the maze in spellhold are Jaheira and Imoen.
Anyone else unlucky enough to be booted at this point in the game will be lost forever in the maze.
The best solution is to boot the person you're about to boot in exchange for Imoen and taking Yoshimo there. That way you can get extra exp from his black heart.

And you've let every other party NPC go, in order to test this? Because if you haven't, I'd like to know the source of this.

I was going to let Imoen make her own way back to the Copper C, but Jaheira laid a big guilt trip on me, and I didn't want to diapoint her since I'm trying to romance her (Jaheira that is).
Nalia didn't whine when I dropped her and said she'd wait there for me. Sure enough, she was still standing there when I walked through the room a while later. I guess she's stuck there now. I wonder what'll happen when I get back to the keep.

If she said she'll wait for you, she'll wait for you there, year in, year out, faithfully. Party NPCs in Bioware games are like that. It's a loyalty I'd expect out of a dog, not a human or...whatever.
But when they offer you an option to meet up at another place, take it, since you won't be coming back that way, again.

I was expecting the "meet back at the coronet" offer from her, but all I got was the "so long, I'll wait here if you need me".
I kinda felt guilty when I walked back through the room a little later and saw her standing over there, doing the little bored stretching thing that the NPC's do. I could just imagine the awkward conversation..
"So how's it going.. anything new in this dungeon? Made any attempts to get out yet? Has Bodi started hunting us yet? Any other nasties come by? Well no, OK, we'll be moving on then."
I'm trying to remember if she had the keys to the Keep or not.

Ah I've been looking for the FAQ I go this from and it's taking a while, but I have tried this on Valygar, Imoen, Minsc, Yan, Haer'Dalis and of course Yoshimo. The only one's that I've seen return are Imoen and Jaheira otherwise the only options you get are "wait here until I get you".
With my other solo guy I'll bring the rest of the people I haven't tried but it's beating the dead horse when I know that only Imoen and Jaheira are the only ones smart enough to return.
It should be easier to prove me wrong, but my experiments haven't done that yet.
It is a maze afterall and not one that can be escaped easily.
