1. Elmo starts as a level 4 fighter and will choose Ranger for the rest of his levels. That means he won't get 2-weapon style until lvl 6. Until then you get -6 to AB with the main weapon & -10 with off-hand weapons unless they're small (daggers,shortswords etc) in any size modus. Greatswords (large) become normal sized with Enlarge spells, but the -6/-10 still apply. And you don't get the 1.5 x STR bonus either way, that only applies when you actually use 'Two Hands' on a weapon. This means a Gnome/halfling character gets it with a normal longsword, and if you 'Reduce' Elmo he get's it with his Battle Axe.
2. You need to patch your game one more step, with ver 2.0 at least. This is a bug. If you have an Elf in the party he should be able to find all secrets no matter his class (also a bug, but more useful).

I would not do this if i were you. Better to give him Battle Axe & Shortsword.
