The best discipline goup
The best discipline group
Which is the most useful? The best looking? The most uber? My vote goes to Dominate, simply on the basis of usefulness. Trance for feeding, level 3 and up for nice instant kills. My Tremere even shunned Thraumaturgy in favor of Dominate
My vote goes to Celerity. What's not to like about shotgunning somebody, watching their body fly through the air in slow motion, then running over to behind them and shooting again before they hit the ground?
What about dodging bullets as you watch them make ripples through the air?

Even though i never had the chance to use celerity, i can recogniza a good thing , when i see it
If the script-steered enemies can be annoying with this skill (run and shoot..)
i don't even want to imagine what it could do in the hands of a human player.
Somehow i am glad for my Tremere char, that there is no multiplayer support now ^^

I haven't tried ranged combat, yet, largely because of the skill investment it requires, and (from what I've read) the low return on value. Is that not the case, and does Celerity make a difference?
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I just beat the game as a Ventrue using ranged weaponry and Domination as my main combat feats. Let's put it this way... I have no idea why people rag on ranged weaponry so much. With 10 points in firearms (yeah, a lot, I know) and crouched, I could hit any guy in 30 meters with my Killmatic, and very little recoil. With 5 points in firearms, I was doing 50 damage a hit with the Colt, once again hitting people 30 meters away without a hitch.
Is it harder than melee? Probably. You need ammo... I didn't buy enough when I did the Hollywood Warrens, and so had to deal with the last level by sneaking and meleeing. The beginning of the game is hard, yes, since all you have is a .38... by the time you get a Brock or Utica, you're fine. By the end of the game, when you're sniping people with the Steyr or mowing them down with the Killmatic, you really are a killing machine.
I think the biggest thing to note, though, is that ranged weaponry really is a different style to play the game. Stealth isn't used to kill people anymore-- its used to get in position. Hallways aren't evil places to quickly run down, they're useful for drawing enemies into you. You can't play Vampire as a shooter, and you have to remember that as well.
Give guns a try, but keep in mind it won't be easy, or what you expect.

I found Animalism to be a bit of a letdown. Levels one and two are fairly useless, levels 3 and 4 are standard instant kill spells, and level 5 isn't worth the trouble...
Also, is there any use for Presence? Does it make any difference in a fight?
Funny, thraumaturgy has zero votes. I expected more since there's a thread about the greatness of thraum

I can't believe this...I'm the only one who voted for thaumaturgy?! Maybe I'm just obsessed with blood...shooting out blood projectiles, making people vomit blood, covering myself in a shield of blood, making people's blood boil, etc. Seriously though, my Tremere was mostly ranged weapons (colt Anaconda, all the way!) and combined with bloodstrike I bet I could've given Caine a run for his money by the end! Left click: BLAM BLAM BLAM! While reloading, Right click: SQUIRT SQUIRT SQUIRT! I do admit that bloodstrike is pretty useless against lesser vampires and mortals, but that's what the fire axe comes in...

Concerning Presence. . .I can't give you any exact numbers, but I have noticed that my character seems to get hit significantly less when using it. Also, the trance function (at least at higher levels) can be real handy when dealing with groups. It won't get all of them, but it will probably get enough to keep you from getting mobbed.
As for thaumaturgy. . .well, this is only a guess, but thaumaturgy seems to support an entirely different style of gameplay. Now me, I'm a stealth gameplayer. So I like most of my action up close and personal. For the gunfighter type, I'd say there is also a sense of being in the middle of the action. For the thaumaturgist, however, this can quickly turn into a slaugtherfest where your character is unlikely ever to be in any serious danger. If you go for that sort of thing, then you'd probably like thaumaturgy. . .maybe most people just don't go for that short of thing.

Oh, and a quick additional note. I voted for obfusticate. For a stealth player, this ability is the greatest. My Malkavian managed to clean out the rail yards without a shot being fired or a voice being raised, and then waltz out the front doors without encountering any frenzied sabbat (if no alarm is raised those big front doors on the loading dock will not automatically close).
Close seconds: celerity, dementation, & domination.
Worst ability: Protean. I figured this would be a cool ability to have, but for some reason it seems to slow my Gangrel character down big time when trying to fight. I seem to get in half as many strikes that hit half as many times. . .better off using bare hands.

I actually think thaumaturgy is well suited for the gunfighter "unreal tournament" types, in that vast amounts of damage can be dished out with ease. You definately have a point in that it almost makes the game too easy, but isn't "the best discipline" basically a vote for the most powerful discipline? If this is the case, whatever else is said, I think we can all agree that protean sucks big time.

I voted for Dominate, because frankly, holding down the shift key to walk through the swarms of Samurai at the base of the temple while raising a hand casualy and casuing them to choke to death in hordes made me feel like I had a much bigger manhood then I do In Real Life... *weeps*
However, if it's down to most useful, I'd have to say Fortitude. Oh Fortitude, how did I ever live without you? You are my friend, mother and secret lover. The fight against the sherif, being swarmed by armies of humans, the streets where vampires want to destory you, the hengi in chinatown... Oh baby, Fortitude was my meat and drink. Without it, my Katana and I would have been in the "Also Ran" section of the game history.

I was Diablorised once. I got better.
Presence rules!
Remember "VTM: Redemption"? I think in that game the last level in Presence used to be called Majesty
I enjoy a mellee style of play, (although I have to recognize I used stealth kills as often as I could) so Presence was a major boost, especially against larger packs of monsters and the bosses. It has a 25% chance to mesmerize the enemy and they also get a -5 penalty to strength, wits, & perception, and a reduced rate of attack.
If on top of that you use a level 2-3 (not to mention 5) Fortitude and boost your soak feats by 2-3 points, you'll be nearly impossible to hit. Top that with a Blood Buff, which boosts your Strength, Stamina and Dexterity by 5 points and you're a killing machine.
There were parts of the game where I used ranged combat (taking out Bach, for instance, since he kept on jumping around and I was to lazy to run after him only to get one hit... or that tzimice, when he keeps going into the ground and summons those creatures) and I have to say that Anaconda was a very nice weapon to handle, but nothing compared with my double speed katana...

Heh, presence is the bee's knees for sure. I know it's a little off topic, and I'm gonna get spanked, but does anyone remember the way in redemption that presence would maeke other vampires stand around you perfectly still and stare so you could attack them? I beat that entier game killing everyone with level one presence:
"Awe, you stand perfectly still. I grab you, drain you dry, awe the next guy"
I'm SO glad they changed it in Bloodlines. The "reluctant attack reducing Str" thing is a whole bunch better then just having them standing perfectly still and waiting to die a horrid death.

Actually, I found this useful for feeding. Charmed enemies are unable to resist even a level 1 feed. This baby got me through the Tremere chantry
