How does the Masquerade and Vamp. Jobs fit together?

Post by Intergalactic »

*minor NPC spoilers follow*

Aren't Vampires supposed to hide from the public, to avoid unwanted attention?
But let's have a look at the cover identities:
-Lacroix: Almost perfect. As a CEO he can justify a very secluded private life.
-Terese/Jeanette: They own a *club* and Jeanette sleeps around. Now is that risky social life ,or what?
-Ash: No it isn't. Being a celebrity to start with, he own a club and hangs out with his customers. No wonder he gets in trouble.
-VV: As a stripper she has the undivided attention of her guests, and probably a lot of stalkers. She must be suicidal.
-the chief Vamp in Hollywood (name escapes me): He says himself, he discovered Ash as actor. So he is not contend with financing movies. Which forces him to get in contact with *lots* of people. And show up at celebrity events. How did he manage not to blow his cover?

All in all i don't get why the player gets a Masquerade Violation for letting an old friend make a phone call, while all the other vampires present themselves on a silver plate...

If memory serves me, the rumours concerning Jeanette's sleeping around is referred to as 'copulation with other kindred' or something along those lines. So she only bangs those in the loop, so I guess she's cleared.

Actually, shouldn't he have a ton of meetings to attend as a CEO?
Terese/Jeanette: They own a *club* and Jeanette sleeps around. Now is that risky social life ,or what?

Considering they own a night club, they simply come off as a freaky nympho clubber and her stuck up manager sister. You can sleep with one and the other can do most of the "business" over the phone....
-Ash: No it isn't. Being a celebrity to start with, he own a club and hangs out with his customers. No wonder he gets in trouble.

OK, this one sucks more than a bilge pump. An actor is pretty much the worst cover identity ever! He can't film during the day, and aren't his teeth a bit conspicuous?
-VV: As a stripper she has the undivided attention of her guests, and probably a lot of stalkers. She must be suicidal.

This one isn't too bad. Her line of work allows her to be a night owl, and her customers are probably too focused on certain attributes of hers to notice she might be a bit pale. The low body temperature might be a giveaway during lapdances, but once again, I think her customers are quite occupied at the time. But I can see how this would be troublesome for her, and one of her quests does involve getting rid of a hunter....
-the chief Vamp in Hollywood (name escapes me): He says himself, he discovered Ash as actor. So he is not contend with financing movies. Which forces him to get in contact with *lots* of people. And show up at celebrity events. How did he manage not to blow his cover?

Being in the "arts" business is a convenient excuse for any unconventional behaviour he might exhibit, and most social events occur after the sun sets....

That violation is kinda stupid, I agree. I guess any contact with your old life can be viewed as a high risk....

LaCroix: He hold late night meetings, feeds off clients and mannagers maybe? Everyone says "That Sebastian is a real work horse!" and goes home. No big deal.

T and J: Sleeping with kine is the PERFECT way to cover the masquerade. Think about it, your having sex and suddenly your whole world is pleasure, then you feel sleepy and a little dizzy. Nobody screams "Vampire!" they scream "Oh God Yes!!"... As for her sister, nothing like controling a perfect feeding ground to get you good friends amoung other vampiers.

Ash: Actors make okay vampires if they do it right, but Ex-Actors like Ash make perfect Vampires. He runs a night club, all the mortals flock to him like sheep BEGGING to be wrapped in his arms and nibbled on, when the time comesthat he should vanish from the public eye, he fakes his own death and runs the night club in secret through a ghoul or some similar ploy. Perfect unlife.
As for actors themselves, it's usualy more a case of having the film crew in your pocket, or ghouled.. or just Blood Bound so they don't ask questions. As for Fangs, in theory... Thou the computer games never do this for some reason, dramatics I spose... Vampire fangs are retractable, vanishing into the gums and growing only when needed. There is a Flaw that makes your fangs permenent.. So I spose any actors with that Flaw would need to be in ONLY vampire flicks, he he he.

V.V: The stripper and club owner life is perfect. Nobody REALLY cares what the stripper looks like all that much, and once you've got a client in a private room for a dance, chances are he/she wont be asking many questions when you go a little beyond dancing with them.

Issac: Yeah, being a behind the scences mannager of anything is perfect. Nobody see's you much, but everybody knows your name. Quite handy.

The following things should be noted, thou the game doesn't go into much detail on them: Vampires LOOK LIKE PEOPLE. Maybe a little pale, their eyes a little hungry, maybe a little too perfect if you get close and REALLY look... Maybe a touch to still if they aren't moving.. But otherwise, you wouldn't know them from the person sitting next to you. As vampires drop in humanity, they look more and more unatural.. Palid, reflective eyes, constant snarls, mother-of-pearl finger nails, skin like stone. By spending bloodpoints, they can imitate humanity for a few hours.. Heart beat, blinking, breathing, warm, pink skin, sex, that sorta thing.
All this adds up to one simple thing: Unless you know what your looking for, you aren't going to know a vampire from anyone else in the world. Of course, the people who DO know what they are looking for tend to be other vampires.
Depending on the Prince of a city (and how much you've urked him/her recently) a Masquerade breech can be somthing as small as talking to a mortal... Thats right, if the prince REALLY hates you, just talking to a human can be considered putting the masquerade at risk. However, if the prince loves you to bits, you could walk around and scream about vampires and it could be said that "No human would belive you anything but a fool, I see no risk... the best secrets are ones you don't seem to need to keep"
To that end, a mortal recognising you from your living days, calling all your friends and telling them they saw you, and all those friends then looking for you, calling people about you, hunting you down.. After your clinicaly declared dead.. Can cause quite a bit of harm to the Masquerade. Nobody will instantly put one and one together and say "You must be a vampire now, hows that working out" but they will start investigations, and then people will be looking for you, checking out your credit cards and banks, name useage, car records, old haunts.. What if they do start to put the masquerade at risk? Or even worse, what if Vampire Hunters catch wind that someone saw their dead friend walking around, all pale and sick looking? Uh oh.
So, um, yeah... Uphold the Masquerade or the prince will cut your head off, swift and sure!
I was Diablorised once. I got better.
