Is it possible for 2 of my friends and I to play through the story over the internet doing quests etc...? Is that fun? Any thoughts and feelings are welcomed. Wondering if I should have my 2 buddies buy it to play online together.

Well, sure it's fun to play online, but I don't recommand you to play with 2 other people. When you're 3, there's always one that have/want to leave, so the 2 others can't play.
I would suggest you to play 2 games (1 with your friend #1 and another with your other friend) to avoïd schedule conflicts.
