Soloing as a wizard ?!
Soloing as a wizard ?!
Just wondering. Has anybody tried to solo ID2 as a wizard (or sorcerer) and would like to share his experience with all of us? Was thinking of doing so myself. I can imagine a 10+ level wizard to hold on to itself, but are unsure if he will survive Targos...
Any comments?

When you learn fireball you will be just fine... before that spells that have some sort bigger damage radius than 1 monster are your friends..

as a SC wizard I would guess that you won't survive Targos - don't know which level you have when soloing before the assault on Targos...
...so don't exactly know what spells are available!
...but when soloing I would say evasion is the critical feat for this battle so I would definetly start with a rogue level!
..if you use a drwo (m) and add a few rogue, fighter & barb levels:
for example -> rogue 3 - fighter 2 or 4 - barb 2 or 3 - ranger 0 or 2 - wizard 18 - 23
then you shouldn't have that many problems when soloing...
btw. a pal 2 - sorc X (eventually add 2 or 3 monk or rogue levels for evasion and 2 or 4 fighter levels for feats) could also be a good choice for soloing with an arcane caster!
...but if you decide to solo with a SC wizard keep us updated about your progress...
...hmmm - I would bet that you won't beat the game on normal without cheating

Er... With nothing but a Magic Missile on stock it must be pretty hard to survive... But I would try, I definitely would. That's what I call challenge
I wouldn't waste any levels to other classes, I'd just improve as a mage as fast as I could so that I could get access to hihger lvl spells as soon as I can.
Good luck!![Smile :)](./images/smilies/)

Up the IRONS!
Lack of spells....
I was brave enough to start the solo wizard adventure. Choosing a deep gnome Illusionist and by maxing DEX I got a pretty good AC to start with and chose a crossbow as my favorite weapon. Actually this way Targos and the pallisades were no problem at all. The real problem occurs at around the time you kill Torak. I was at level 6 then and could level up to 7 (and eventually 8). But, it doesn't make sense. There's no access to 4th level spells at that point, so my character can not develop any further. On the other hand the game adapts to my high level character in throwing tons of monsters against me, which at some point is just too much....
Too bad. Maybe I'll try a sorcerer next time... or a druid... or a bard... They don't have to care for getting access to those spells they're entitled to.

Spellpower scales up to caster lvl 20-25, so it is wise to use the remaining levels for other, more beneficial, classes.
e.g.
3 lvl rogue for keeping dex bonus if caught flat-footed, evasion and sneak damage
2 lvl barbarian for keeping dex bonus if caught flat-footed (stacks with rogue so you can't be flankt), speed bonus and HP
1 lvl Monk for cleave, evasion and wis to ac
4 lvl fighter for ws and 2 more feats
2-3 lvl Paladin for char bonus to saves and immunity to fear and disease; gaining stat bonus due to quest
and now I present a fun character (only usable with mods(druid rebalancing from ease of use, alignment restriction removed and impr. bastard swords) from Westley Weimar)
Level Class
2 Paladin
2 Barbarian
1 Monk
1 Rogue
24 Druid (level squatting here; always advance to next spl-lvl = 2 class lvl)
Dex min. 15; max wis(+holy transference +lvl up), high Int and Char, maybe Str 13 (if you want power attack + great cleave)
you need proficency (at least 1 point) in long swords and bastard swords
ambidex and twf helps with attack rating
offhand weapon: bloody wrath -> Str +8, Con +8 (even when morphed to elemental half dragon -> 100+ damage in one attack, thats up to 400+ in one round)
or offhand: know they family -> permanent executioner's eye (threat on crits =12-20)
whoops, way off-topic, sorry but I got carried away![Big Grin :D](./images/smilies/)
