Vampires
Vampires
I've got a problem with the vampires - they cast some spells and then one of my heroes fights on their side. How can I protect myself against this? What is the best spell against vampires?
Vampires, oh my!
The spell is dire charm. Vampires do that.
Special defensive spells you want are negative planes protection, so they can't level drain, and charm immunity. Both of these can also be obtained from items. Also Pro Undead scrolls will render them unable to see you.
Offensive spells are the AoE undead ones, like Sunray, and a single class evil cleric may be able to turn or even dominate undead, or good ones can turn them, or at higher levels, just blow them up. Dual or multi-class clerics and paladins can't usually do much better than turning undead, which makes them run away.
Also, some weapons can disrupt undead, causing them to have to save or die instantly.

I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.
Spoilers ahead:
Negative plane protection is a clerical spell. You don't have to buy it.
Azuredge, the anti undead axe is at the adventurers mart. there is also a mace of disruption somewhere in the game. Scrolls againt undead (so tehy cant see u) can be bought from temples.
Also, some classes/kits have anti undead abilities such as hold undead. Minsc has vampires as his racial enemy.
Korgan's berseking may protect againt level drain. not sure offhand.
Oh, you should get Daystar....the sword being guarded by a lich in a hidden room in the tavern at teh agtes. if u cant fight the lich....haste haste and invisibility on your theif. send him to the chest...unlock it...grab the sword and scroll, and run for teh exit before his timestop spell goes off. That sword is +4 vs undead and casts that sunspell that affects undead. you can also lok into memorizing that spell. someone else mentioned it.
I'm not sure offhand about anti charm spells and items. Maybe the chaotic commands spell? Also...you could dispell magic on a charmed character, or charm them back (with the ring of human influence from teh circus) or a charm spell.
aldo, u may want to look into summoned monsters that cant be level drained or charmed (skeletons? elementals?)

"Azuredge, the anti undead axe is at the adventurers mart."
This is incorrect. Azuredge is sold (for an -extremely- cheap price compared to equivalent weapons) by Bernard in the Copper Coronet after you've freed the slaves (sp?).
Here's a spoiler - highlight only if you want to know the location of the Mace of Disruption:
It's in a pool of blood in Bohdi's lair. You may need to click on it twice to get it.
Some items that provide good protection against charming are Helms of Charm Protection (there's several in the game I think) and the 2 handed sword Lilalcor which you can get in the sewers beneath the Copper Coronet (this sword and Minsc were almost made for each other)

Lilacor and Minsc are perfect for each other, I agree. Unless of course you're a fighter or something with profiency (sp?) with 2handed swords. Though paladins may want Carosmyr later on... *hinthint*
As for vampires... I've only completed the game with a solo paladin (undead hunter) so he had immunity to level drain and since he had some nice helm he was immune to dire charm

in my group i have minsc (and boo ), jaheira , aerie, korgan and jashimo. and I'm still in chapter2.
I wanted to do korgans quest now ,because otherwise he leaves the group
(quess i waited too long).
and when i meet this group of vampires in the bridge district, they do so much damage - a healthy character dies at once when hit or becomes hostile easily.
thank you for your help

The daystar is one of the most recommended items for fighting vampires one of my favourite tactics is simply have a group of summons tank while someone attempts to use the daystar in the background, very rarely can undead resist it's effects. (Liches are about the only ones that can save against the daystar)
Since you have Yoshimo you can simply lay some traps on the floor and lure the vampires onto the traps.
As a few side notes:
*There's only a need to fight one "vampyre" while doing the Korgan quest.
*Vampires can regenerate and have a special melee hit that drains 2 levels of experience per hit. If you are level 10 and get hit by a vampire you will become level 8. When you reach 0 or less levels you die.
*Vampires and a majority of undead are weak against fire but resistant against lightnining.
*Some vampires will cast dire charm or other versions of charm that can control your characters for periods of time. They can be resisted with various spells like mage Immunity: Enchantment or various priest spells.
*You can cure "level drain" at a temple for 750 gold per pop.

Jaheira and Aerie between them should be able to cast enough Negative Plane Protection and Chaotic Command spells to protect Minsc and Korgan for long enough to mince those pesky vamps.
Note that Negative Plane Protection doesn't last very long.

The best tactic I've found if you have limited charm protection and conditions permit is to get one person invisible and block the vampires from getting to your party, then move the rest of the party away except for one person with a range weapon. The invisible person (or persons) stop the vampires from touching, thus draining, your team, and by removing the rest of the party, you prevent the attacker from being charmed and attacking the rest of the party.
If they do get charmed, the only targets they'll see will be the vampires, and since they will have a ranged weapon selected, they won't go melee. Close the door between your party and the fighting folks to prevent wandering, otherwise, use azuredge to make the battle go quickly.
A prime location for this is in a certain area of the windspear area. Good luck!
