Well, id depends, somewhat

Assuming we're restricting ourselves to offensive abilities, GWW is really great for archers and fighters using two handers, and is a rockin' good choice generally.

For dual wielders, who can get 8+ attacks a round with Improved Haste, Smite or Greater Deathblow may actually be a better choice, though both are more resticted.
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

Gotta disagree. I think GWW is superior to all the others available to fighters(which I find are almost totally useless) regardless of the circumstances. As far as balancing individual classes goes, I don't think one can just assume a friendly "improved haste" to be in effect at all times. Frankly GWW is overpowered and three fighters/rangers/paladins all using it at the same time makes many battles trivially easy, which is why I have grown to greatly like the Refinements mod, as it strips that ability from rangers and paladins (they still keep regular Whirlwind) and replaces them with more balanced options. I think it was a very wise balancing move to give only pure fighters (and their kits) GWW as an option as a way to balance fighters against the generally superior rangers/paladins (especially if you don't use the grandmastery un-nerf tweak).

Dualwielders with improved haste ... Critical Strike is a bit better I think.

Aren't many bosses immune to critical hits? If so, then GWW is king. If not, then I'd have to say critical strike is pretty powerful.

After you do the thief stronghold quest your in house merchant sells them
if you are a fighter use ease of use for the thief stronghold note you might need to have the expanded thieves guild installed as well)

In terms of ther main question my preference is GWW

improved haste seems to wear off to quickly (an impression only)

cheers

Well "3 rnd + 1 rnd/lvl" isn't a short time, considering that your mage/sorc. should be over 20th lvl, compeared to the meager round of GWW.

For me the one I used more is Hardiness: 40% res. to phisical dmg isn't bad (specially for Barb. and/or combined with DoE or other items that have dmg red.), and is the only HLA that last a decent amount of time (1 rnd every 2 lvl of the caster, so usually more than 10 rnd).

Personally I prefer both GWW and Critical Strike. Depending on the enemy. Deathblow and Greater Deathblow are not that useful as all the really bad- bad- bad guys are too high level to notice (or I may be thinking ToB). I thus mostly have GWW and CS supplemented by a few deathblows (they can come in handy), Smite, hardiness and resistance to magic.

Best wishes; Palle
