amn versus baldur's gate...

Post by dark__ranger »

Ok, if baldur's gate and amn went to war, like almost happened in BG1, who do you think would've won? I mean, Amn does have the shadow thieves, but still they'd be fighting a war leagues away, baldur's gate would be fighting in their back yard...

Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Baldur's Gate just a city and Amn an entire nation? If so, Amn would crush them.

Now, Baldur's Gate against Athkantla (or however you spell it) would be a different story...
You will run afoul of both a common misconception and a family of bears.

So it's SwordCoast vs. Amn, isn't?

lol...amn would still win. But i mean baldur's gate didnt have all the cowled wizards stuff and shadow thieves HQ..if it came down to total victory or total death...hell, athkatla would probably StILL kick Bg's and friendly arm and nashkell all together. But i think BG did have a more cultured city (where else would you find noblemen walking about the street with dirty peasants :p

That would be an uneasy situation for the Shadow thieves as they have agents in both Baldurs Gate and Amn.
I think Amn would win even though the Gate has the renouned flaming fist warriors.
Mainly because Amn is a Nation, it is the richest in Faerun along with Waterdeep and therefore could muster a much larger army than the gate.

Britain was a great and powerful nation and it lost to a ragtag band of colonials defending their backyards (in a little thing called the Revolutionary War). To me Baldur’s Gate and the surrounding area embodies more of that spirit then the avaricious merchant nation of Amn. Don’t underestimate the power of a few rural peasants defending their homes. ;)
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I think the Amn folks have to be pretty tough. What with beholders, mind flayers, and liches behind every door, and dragons and demons all over the place. Just serviving to adulthood must be a major feat in that part of the world. What do we have on the sword coast, just wolves, basilisks, and kobolds. Not near as tough growing up there. :)

if they had some sort of a map detailing where all the major settlements were (neverwinter, waterdeep etc.etc.) no doubt it wouldnt be hard to tell who had the strategic advantages...but youre right about the ragtag colonists, kayless

dark_ranger,

Nashkell belongs to Amn (you meet Amnish soldiers there, just talk to them).

I think it's Beregost that has a mayor from Baldur's Gate. :)

In the BG world, the lowliest mercenary in Athkatla is about the same level as the toughest stuff the Gate has to offer...

I would vote for Sword Coast over Amn. Amnish regulation over Magic forced many wizards to leave. Remember, in BG2 manual Elminster comment? " Even I had to be careful in these lands?", or something. So I would think there are more better Mages you could find in the Sword Coast, and those who do not live their would probably support BG just because I do not see the possibility of any free mage liking Amn.

nice point there, but remember athkatla has it's own mage facilities, so any rogue mages, even if they were cooperational, would be next to useless when comapared with the likes of the shadow thieves or cowled wizzies.

Yeah it seems like there are plenty of mages in Athkatla, I guess they're just all 5.000 gold poorer than the ones in BG.
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....
