Question: can you backstab with blunt weapons?

Post by Bodhidharma »

I just read a character analysis thing, the one you can download from this sight, and I was really impressed with the 'stalker/cleric' combo described. So i made a stalker, and trained him in blunt weapons, since he wouldn't be able to use blades after i dualed him.

Ok i haven't done much experimenting with his backstab ability, only a few times i have even tried, but i noticed that when i had him dual wielding maces, i never got any indication of him doing a backstab, but then it occured to me that maybe he couldn't backstab with blunt weapons so i switched his weapons to two swords (which he wasn't proficient in) and lo and behold, his first two attempts he got x2 backstabs, it even said "beavis backstabs for double damage!"

i haven't gotten the backstab message when he was dual wielding maces. But again i haven't tried this more than a handful of times, maybe it was just coincidence? His stealth is at around 100 and he has no problem hiding in shadows and walking right up to enemies and getting first attack.

I've never tried to backstab with blunts before, but how the hell do you backstab with a mace?... i think you have to be pretty damn strong to be able to stab anyone with a mace atall...

LoL
funny, but fyi i found out you can backstab with clubs or quarterstaffs. Only blunt weapons you can backstab with apparently. Club = think of the game thief. Thats what someone told me.

Also now I remember reading somewhere that someone had said that the only blunt weapon he could find that worked for backstabbing was a 'staff mace' or something, well i happened to notice that there was a staff mace for sale at the adventurers market, and the proficiency type was: quarterstaff, so that confirms what the first person said, though the second person didn't seem to know about clubs working too :) but i have a question: do good clubs exist in BG II? i have yet to see one that isn't crap.

Yeah "good" clubs exist... i found Blackblood (+3) to be pretty damn usefull against spellcasters and trolls, because it seems like the acid damage ignores stoneskin and well, you need acid or fire to kill trolls

Well in the thief games you dont actully "backstab" with the blackjack, you hit them in the head and render them unconscious ... this can be done with the fist in BG2 (yep) :D

I believe the idea was that you could backstab with all Thief melee weapons.

But you can only "backstab" with shortswords and daggers (piercing) the other weapons just do a surprise attack from the back (but not back"stab".. get it?

Backstab or backthump, as long as I get the damage multiplier :D

BTW, the manual claims you have to be behind the target to be able to backstab, but that's just a load of ****. I bet the game can't even tell when you're "behind" someone.

Also, you can backstab when invisible, no matter how you got there. Thieves equipping the Staff of the Magi can backstab over and over again. Casting Mislead also keeps you invisible even when backstabbing. Who needs Assassinate? :D

Yes, you must be behind someone to be able to backstab and thiefs cant use the staff of magi (maybe in ToB with Use any item ability)

OK so can anyone give a definative answer to the question, what weapons in the BG2 game can a thief and/or stalker use to gain both attack and damage multiplier after the TOB add on has been installed?

Well basicly you can backstab with any melee weapon that a theif (dual/multi or single class) can use (beside some exceptions like the staff of magi)
