Please God someone help me!!!!

Alright, so a long time ago, my brother and I played Torment on his computer. Neither of us ever finished it, and even though I loved the game to death, didnt get to play it much. So, I tried installing on my computer, fine, perfect, installed easily and quickly. I tried playing it and...great! The problem is, no matter what way i try to get out, I cant get out of the mortuary. Portal or door, whenever I leave, the game crashes and i get a little window saying something to the effect of "C++ Runtime Library Error". Please help me. This same thing happened on my computer when I ran ME, and now I have XP. I really want to play the game.

Does it mention a specific file?

Have you installed the latest patch?

Have you tried re-installing?

If you've tried the two suggestions above, and they don't help, try re-installing the C++ runtime library (the current one might be corrupted). You can download the .dll here. You should put it either in the game directory or in %windir%\system32.

edit: In the future, you might want to put more descriptive titles in your threads. Oh god please help me doesn't really tell anyone what the thread is about, and someone who knows the answer might not bother reading through the thread. Just something to keep in mind

It's probably a scratched CD. Attempt to clean it with a piece of cloth and some water and then try the Full Install.

After you have installed the game via the installer program, do the following:

1.) Create a folder on the hard drive that you wish to install the game data to. For this example we'll create a folder on the C drive called TData.

2.) Now in C:\TData create three new folders called CD2, CD3, and CD4.

3.) Insert Torment CD 2 and copy the entire contents of the CD to C:\TData\CD2. Repeat this step with CDs 3 and 4 copying the entire CDs to their corresponding folders.

4.) Edit your Torment.ini file using Notepad or some similar text editor. This file can normally be found in C:\Program Files\Blackisle\Torment. At the very top of the page you'll want to edit the lines that start with CD2, CD3, CD4. Edit them as follows:

CD2:=C:\TData\CD2
CD3:=C:\TData\CD3
CD4:=C:\TData\CD4

5.) From time to time the game will ask you for disk two to authenticate the game. When playing the game keep this disk in your CD tray. You have now completed the full install of Planescape: Torment.

Alright, I tried to update the C++ library, but, couldnt really find a way how to do so. Probably cuz I dont know a whole lot about computers. Or rather, it wont let me overwrite the existing one. Which is annoying.

Also, and possibly related to the above?, it didnt want to copy all of the cd contents to C: it would hit AR0403.bif and would stop, saying that it is an invalid DOS application, or some such...some sorta invalid dos jabi.
Any further help would be appreciated.

Likely the CD is damaged. Did you try to clean it?

Might wanna purchase a new copy...

Im not too sure its the CD, cuz I think it ran off my bro's computer, which is running win 98, and is a pentium...3? or so...besides, buying a new copy requires money, which i am not in possession of, =)

Best $3 you'll ever spend, IMO. And it will save you the headache of trying to replace a damaged file, too.

I may just do that, but I doubt it'll work, as I recall a similar problem with BG2. I couldnt leave the first area of the city once you leave the villain's tower. In fact, I believe it was the same problem.

Not likely. If it's a C++ Runtime Library Error, that refers to files in the game. I suspect both games had CDs that were scratched or otherwise damaged--possibly left in a strong light too long.

Thats what I had thought, but they both run fine on the other computer. So, I have no clue. Why does Black Isle hate my computer so much? Ah well.
I'll just use the old computer.

It might be the combination of scratched CD + new CD-Rom drive that won't play it, where as the older ones might. If cleaning with a cloth doesn't help you can get like one of those special Disk Doctor thingies. It helped me get my Starcraft cd to play on my new computer. I don't remember what the one I have is called, I will tell you when I get home in a few hours.

Could also be that your newer computer has a faster CD-ROM drive. Faster read/write drives are more prone to get caught by errors, while slower drives aren't. For example, if I'm dubbing a copy of an audio CD from one of our disks for my wife to take to work, I'll find about 20% of the time that a very high recording speed fails with an error message from the original disk. I have to drop back to a slower recording speed for the copying to work. There may be ways to adjust the speed, depending on your operating system.
