gnome because he gets +1 to int and -1 to wis. Gnomes look a bit silly so people like to use elves +1 dex -1 con (does not matter in spellcasters).

I personally chose an elf, but gnomes would work fine too. Anything else would not work as well. Humans would not be good because I do not think that wild mages can be dualed.

Best race for wild mages? Elves, because the +1 dex gives them a lower AC, which is very good for mages. They are also 90% resistant to charm-based attacks and they look so very stylish.

The gnomish +1 int is worthless if you buy a potion of genius, which I might add, are plentiful even in BG1!

Besides, I think it's getting out how I feel about Gnomes.

The Stalker/Thief is not a viable character, because Ranger/Thief is not a valid MC. Besides, who wants a Stalker/Thief when they can have a Stalker/Cleric? ;)

EDIT: I know, I know, Stalker/Cleric isn't possible any more since the installation of ToB. But I have one from SoA (before ToB install) :D :D

is the +1 to magic saving throws for every 3.5 Con better than charm and sleep resistance 90%.

Ho Ho, that's right! I forgot about the 3.5 con thing for saves. Well that is nice. I just hope no one mentions it in my down with gnomes thread.

Nope, 19 Dex only gives a missile Thac0 bonus (compared to 18). If you look in the manual's table, you have to go up to 21 to get another bonus point. Elves get infravision (not vital but handy) and resistance to charm and sleep (much handier).

Gnomes have infrared vision too.
