Did anyone ever try going against what their race is good for?
e.g.
Play a Orc that uses Stealth?
Play an Altmer/Breton that uses Combat?
Play a Nord that uses Magic?
It's quite fun, I have one character, a Nord female who plays a Sorceress, the handicap is quite fun, especially if you get to strong too quick with you old characters, also for more 'fun' I chose the sign Artronach, and I am not going to use Creeper or Mudcrab or use trainers "a lot".
EDIT: Excuse the grammar mistake in the Poll question!
I haven't voted on this poll because, yes I have tried, but I got bored quickly and went back to using them for thier specialities, so its a bit of both. I found it be challanging yes, but also it felt a little pointless and from a role-playing value almost weird, why would somebody naturally skilled with a sword want to become a pure mage? (This was my mage redguard that I abandoned on level 4)

at first i did. I figured that if my redguard had +15 to longblade, he didn't need the +30 for it being a major skill as well. To my downfall.
Mag:Don't remember much at all of last night do you? Me:put simply.... No Mag: From what I put together of your late night drunken ramblings? Vodka, 3 girls, and then we played tic-tac-toe and slapped each other around.
I try to put things that have a larger bonus in minor skills though, I want to keep my skills fairly balanced, then again, sometimes the character is a master of long blade, and that'll go in major, even if its a redguard specialising in combat.

I did an Altmer Fighter as my first character. It was tough considering I wasn't really tapping into my high Magic reserves, the reason for playing a High Elf really(and looking down on the Bosmer). But it worked out pretty well, providing I didn't run into swarms of Mages anyway.
In which category would a Dunmer fit in? Stealth, comabt or magic? I played a Dunmer assassin and it was quite fun - I never felt pointless or anything ( and I totally ignored the bonus on Destruction).
I'm playing a Redguard now who's proficient in stealth, but also mastered the axe-skill. His long sword-skill is quite high, too, though I only pushed it to increase my strenght ( with that more morrowind-mod running I really had to...).

Well, seeing as I usually play as a Dark Elf, and they're sort of an "everything" race, it's kind of hard for me to say yes or no. (I know, I need to play a different race. I was an Imperial once. Once... I have a fixation on Dark Elves, for some reason. I liked 'em as a kid, you know, reading stories and such. I dunno. Maybe I'll be a Redguard next. They look pretty neat-o. But the other races just seem too weak, and I don't like being confined to just one specialty.) With my Dark Elf, I do everything. I'm a good thief, battlemage, and wizard. So... I voted "No."

I never took the time to stop and realize that death takes many forms... even while alive.
why!!?!?? whats the point of it? well i am a dark elf too... always. and i dont always use the skill bonuses, but i almost always do. i never can stand a waste.

I once watched my husband play a bosmer fighter. And while I was watching this poor little woodelf die OVER and OVER and OVER again, I thought to myself "That is the sorriest excuse for a fighter I have ever seen." And since then, I use races for what they're good for, or at least for what they're not bad at. After all, I'm of the opinion that Morrowind is a good game when you first start out - if you're not a big cheese-king, it can be fairly difficult. I hate it in the beginning when you go to try and cast a spell - and try as you may, it never works. Why make it harder in the beginning, when it's already at a reasonable difficulty? The races are all the same in the end anyway, right?
you know what they say about all work and no play...
It's totally not worth the monetary rewards!!!
The built in bonus/weakness for each race can make them very different, High Elves for example with that Magicka bonus can lead to a very different came to a Nord.

I just started a game with a Redguard who specializes in magic. There are some drawbacks, especially since I chose the Apprentice as his birthsign and unarmored as a major skill and installed the MW Advanced mod, but so what?

well, the game actually favors going against the race's "purpose" since, the more points you gain in your primary skills, the more levels you get.. thus a breton becomes excellent fighter not only because of the 50magicka resistance but also because he has to train long blade, heavy armor, athletics, acrobatics etc. without innate bonuses.
only ill effect is if you want to make a fighter into a mage since the race doesn't give you bonus to intelligence..
I just started a High Elf paladin with the Apprentice sign. I have Disease resitance (yay) and weakness against... everything. Took me 10 tries to kill the murderer of Processus because his spell killed me in one cast (50% weakness to magicka), and my paladin oath forbids me from using paralyze and such. My Argonian Knight is probably not typical for the race. She doesn't use Spears much at all. I don't mind the concept of trying out difficult combinations, but one has to be prepared to struggle in the beginning!
