I am glad you like my avatar. That fella's name is Kyja T.
His is a level 8 soldier-level 12 extreme LS guardian. Possible Spoiler.
Stats 19/14/14/8/14/14. Items worn are Bio-Antidote Package, Stabilizer Mask, Dominator Gloves, Prototype Verpine Shield, Mandalorian Melee Shield, Quel's Robes, Adrenaline stimulator belt, and Darth Bandon's special double lightsaber.
He specializes in Master Speed, Power Attack and Force Wave.
The portrait used is the guy with the crew cut and the goatie.
That picture was taken on Korriban, my final StarForge Map. He went on to kill the entire Korriban Sith camp and entered the StarForge alone.
There is no best combination. Depends on your playing style. You have to know what you want and work with what is provided in kotor.

In the end, everything will be alright. If it is not alright, it is not the end.

I agree with sun_facer it all depends on your play style, but after playing through the game multiple times I have a few general rules that I have found to work.
1. Jedi Sentinels are jack of all trades and master of none, so I find them useless.
2. Scoundrels and Scouts should be combined with Consulars because consulars need wisdom, and dexterity as do scouts and scoundrels.
3. Soldiers should be combined with Guardians because they need constitution, and strength as do guardians.
4. Consulars should be darkside because the darkside powers are offensive and consulars need to be able to attack somehow.
5. Guardians should be lightside because lightside powers are utility powers that assist in defeating enemies.
Those are just my observations you can argue with them if you want.

I've got one rule: Try any combination, and if it works for you, go for it. The enemy AI in KotoR is poor. With a team of three paraplegics you could probably mop 'em up, and with the crew you have, any configuration with a reasonable choice of powers and such will easily succeed.
I last played a LS Consular Soldier: lots of strength and power for melee, lots of Jedi stuff for the attack. It was great fun, though I had to drop my team to two on occasion just to make it a bit challenging.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
I dunno if u mean story-wise in your question...but here goes.
I think consulars are the mediators of the Jedi council. A good example is Master Yoda, if you are a Star Wars fan, you would know who he is. Very famous little fella. Consulars prefer to achieve objectives by negotiation and talks rather than forceful take-overs. They use more of the Force in manipulation. They tend to use more of intelligent schemes. I strongly suspect Darth Sidious (aka Palpatine) is also a consular but a Dark one.
Guardians are the "hands" of the Jedi council. They are strong, resilient and are unmatched in lightsaber combat. They use less of schemes and the Force. The great Obiwan was such a great jedi guardian although he was a poor master to Anakin. I suspect Anakin himself is a guardian. Darth Maul is surely one. To them, the lightsaber is their main weapon in combat (it's the 1st thing they draw).
In this light, I am sad to say I have no idea what sentinels are.... In fact, it is to my disgrace that I dunno what Luke Skywalker is. I mean.... he is good for nothing!... ok.. maybe I was being too harsh. But come on.. the 2nd last hope of the universe got to be better than that!
In KOTOR, I love guardians coz I am the brains behind the character. The character be what the character was meant to be - the "hands". Therefore, I prefer to have strong "hands"... the guardian suits my style. I love melee, I love unmatchable attack ratings, I love incredible vitality that matches the rancors. I love crashing down on my enemies, closing the distance instantly. I do not bother with stealth, my character must be might. I love the idea that should I walk into a battle unprepared, I can still ace it.
I said all that to say that you want to know what you want.. and then look at what KOTOR has given. Then you will find what combination you would term as "best".

It really depends on what you like. My preferred is a Scout 8/Consular 12. I have done the following:
Light Side male Scout 8/Consular 12
Light Side female Scoundrel 8/Sentinel 12
Dark Side male Soldier 8/Guardian 12.
By level 20 and the end game, they have a variance in skills, feats, and powers but because I'm used to them by the end game, I can beat Malak with just as much ease no matter which character I pick. It is all about the strategy, Force usage, stims, and all that stuff. I personally don't think there is a "best" overall, but there is a "best" for you.
I prefer the Scout/Consular route and tend to buff my group with Valor then I hit myself with Speed and Force Armor and then I attack and slaughter. I really don't have any trouble with anything (especially since in addition to the buff powers, I also max the Stun and Stun Droid lines).

Ok I disagree
1) Yes they are jack of all trades but have the best of both guardian and consular while still maintaining a balance. Personally my favourite combination is scout/sentinel
2)Why not a scout/guardian, that way you'd get uncanny dodge which would be useful in a scrap.
3)Same as 2 really why?!? If you sorted the stats of your scout or scoundrel properly you could easily have them become a Guardian.
4)Not at all, my LS Consular is easily the match for a DS Consular, yes the DS have more offensive but the LS is hardly defenseless, quite the opposite.
5)Huh! Yet again why!?! Either LS or DS is good for a guardian, slow and plague work well as does insanity for a melee character.
Anyway to sum up the whole point is not to be constrained to using certain types of character in certain roles. There are benefits and points against each style of play.

People, be guardians!!!
I don`t know if you know but you don`t need to advance in levels (but level 2) until you change your class to jedi. This gives you a though start but easy walkthrough later in the game. You can be level 2 something and level 18 jedi!!!!
Think about it. Guardian is far best choice. In level 18 as guardian I had more than 200 force points and with maximum aligment to one of the sides you do not need more force than that. And you kick ass also with lightsaber like hell. Enjoy the game...

Only one small flaw with that arguement, despite the fact that skills aren't really very neccesary in KOTOR, having them can give you some benefits, like persuading people to give you more money without using the Force or repairing HK so he has his bonuses. Playing as only a guardian is good as long as all you want to do is melee and thats it. I personally found it too easy playing as a guardian and annoying that I couldn't use some skill specific abilities like repairing bots myself, useing terminals, etc. Yet again, people should play the game how they want, be it a whirling dervish Guardian or a blaster weilding sentinel with stealth or any of the other many combinations. There is no best combination, it all depends on your personal preference.
