Getting Fallout 2 to work in XP

Post by krupp12w »

Been trying to get this game to run for some time now with no luck. I have tried all forms of installation and the play option never comes up in autorun. If I try and start the game thru program manager I get the error "Couldn't find/load text fonts". I have loved tthe Fallout games and would really like to play this one. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I found this, although it says it is for the editor - it would be worth a try:
To fix this problem change the mapper2.cfg file's [system] section to the following:

[system]
critter_dat=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data
master_dat=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\master.dat
master_patches=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data

Where H:\ is the letter of your HD, and Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\ is the path to the editor. You should manually locate your executable/data files and change the path accordingly.

Try that and see if it works.

I'm not sure I understand ...

Your game runes fine - except apparently for "Swift Learner"?
So why would you need to alter something that *maybe* has to do with an error on text-fonts?
(and btw - I don't seem to have that file either ... )

but all seemed fine just like u posted

when my cd autoruns it also never gives me the option "play" just install game
:/ so wtf is this?

some registration error? or cd to hdd and backwards?

and prolly is bad for swift learner perk too so is this fixable?

Actually I'm having trouble with the find/load text fonts error. But when I go into the fallout2.cfg underneath the [system] heading the lines that the trouble shooter tells you to add are already there. Namely;

[system]
critter_dat=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data
master_dat=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\master.dat
master_patches=H:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data

Where H:\ is the letter of your HD, and Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2\ is the path to the editor(only I assume it is the path to the game as it is the config file for the game and not the editor). You should manually locate your executable/data files and change the path accordingly.

Could anyone please help me with this problem. The solution you posted is for thge editor but I'm not using the editor, I'm not too savvy with things like this but I would really like to play Fallout 2 again, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. :)

eh where do u need editor for?

if u want to open fallout.cfg use notepad or something
then just follow the lines

like for example in the cfg file there say's H:\fallout2\critters\critters.dat
now u go check manually to see if the file is actully there
double click my computer then H:\ then choose amp fallout2 then critters then see if there's a file named critters.dat

hope that helps the thing your asking is kinda vague to me

or it's just me having too much alcohol in my head :D

I have got strange error message lately when I have tried to start Fallout 2:
"You must have at least 2 MB free memory on your harddrive to use this program." or something like that. The strange thing is, that I have over 3 GB free memory and every other program works, so I guess it has something to do with F2. Anyone knows how to solve this problem? May this be cause of Win XP? F2 has worked on my comp without problems before, and I don't want to reinstall it and all those patches.

Didn't change anything.
Also, looks like this was only on of those stranges Windows problems, cause After several (IIRC, 5 or 6) reboot, it suddenly worked again, and haven't had any prob since.

I just recieved a copy of Fallout 2 I purchased off Ebay. (I have played this before, but I think I lent FO2 to my brother cause I couldn't find it.) It came in a generic jewel case, but the CD looks legit.

This is the first time I have tried installing in on WinXP. During installation (Huge Installation) about 2/3s the way through the progress bar stops, and my CDROM slows down. After waiting 5 mins, with nothing happening, I get the message that the BG2 movie is going to start. I wait through the movie, and try lauching the game from my Start Menu. I get the "Couldn't find/load text fonts." error. I checked my fallout2.cfg file for the paths, as stated above, and they are correct. When the Autorun starts, the 'Play' button isn't activated, still the 'Install' button is. I have uninstalled/reinstalled, patched, and rebooted my machine, nothing works.

BTW...Anyone ever notice the wierd guy's head for fallout2.exe icon. (Chubby bearded guy with glasses) In your directory that is, not the shortcut. What is up with that?

Anyone have a hint that might help me?

Yes I installed the game. Most of the installation completed, because I can access the game through my start menu. But AutoRun still says 'Install'.

I tried launching the game and I get the text font error message. The BG2 movie only starts after 'Installation' which, for some reason, did not full complete because I am having problems.

Has anyone seen this before and gotten their game to work?

i got the autorun problem too but i can play nonetheless

but one thing still makes me confused
u say you completed the installion but usay most and next thereafter u say the bg2 movie launches after installtion wich for some reason did not full complete :S

and what path do you install fallout2 too?

My path is the default:
C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2

Ok, let me try and be clearer. :)

When I run Install, the Progess Bar (showing the 'amount' of installation complete) gets to about 2/3 done, then stops. By this I mean the CD-ROM slows to almost nothing and information stops transferring to the HD (no red HD light on my computer).

I wait 5-10 minutes then a message box comes up saying that the installation is complete and that the BG2 movie is going to run. This message doesn't look right. By this I mean it pops up but the whole message 'description' isn't there. The end is cut off. It is hard to explain, but the colors look off I think. Anyways, I get the meaning of this message and just click OK.

The BG2 movie runs, and I wait for it to finish.

Now I am back to my desktop. I go to my Start Menu and run the game. This is where I get the 'text font' error I explained earlier. The only option it gives me is to hit OK, so I do. At this point, I am still at my desktop as I can't run the game because I get the 'text font' error.

From here I can run AutoRun from the CD and I see that the 'Install' option is still available, and the 'Play' option is not.

I say the Installation did not complete because that is what I THINK happened since the progress bar stopped during the installation process AND the AutoRun still thinks the game needs to be installed. I believe that not all the game information got transferred correctly.

I was hoping to be able to find some help on the forum from people who have had similar dealings with FO2 and WinXP and found a way to get it to work. I love this game, and will be very depressed if I will no longer be able to play it on my machine. I cringe at the though of having to 'Frankenstein' my old HP PII 350 machine just to play this game that we all love. (And in order to do that I would need to find a replacement 8GB HD, I fried my last one.)

HELP?! :)

I Google'd the test font error and found a Polish site that has the fallout2.cfg file for download. I traslated some of the site in an online translator and it seems that this me be some help. I will try loading this on my system when I get home.
http://www.kasiakrak.piwko.pl/patche.html

I guess it brings me to this question. What is supposed to be in the fallout2.cfg file? This one shows alot of settings, but in the one on my computer I only see the 4 paths that were brought up in a previous post.

Following Added 1/25/05:

I also found this thread which says you can choose to run fallout2.exe in Win98 mode in the .exe's properties. I'll try this too.
http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/showt ... hp?t=30262

I am just researching as many leads as I can find that might help someone else in the future.

UPDATE:
I tried all these and came up with nothing. I ended up doing a Large install option, not Huge and it installed and worked. So something is wrong with the Huge install for me.

UPDATE TO UPDATE:
After further ispection of my CD I have found a small, but deep, scratch in my disc. I should have given it a better inspection initially but since it was new I thought there wouldn't be that problem. Anyways, I get the same problem with my computer when I manually try to transfer the 'master.dat' file from my CD to my hard drive. (I think it is master.dat, I'm not at home right now.) So I think the scratch is interfering with the transfer of the master.dat file.
