Actually, leveling like that will still cause you to get an xp penalty because when you take the first bard level you will be Rogue 3/Fighter 2/Bard 1. The Bard 1 is two off of Rogue, thus giving you an xp penalty. Bard won't become the favorite class until it's higher than Rogue. The favored class for Human and Half-Elf is which ever class is the highest. You don't get to choose.
WRONG
Favored class is ignored in determining the XP penalty-like I said in the original post. For a human character-which is what I said I was talking about-the favored class will be rogue if no bard levels are taken until after the bard and fighter levels are gotten out of the way. With them finished and once bard levels are added in the XP penalty is going to check against the fighter and bard levels-until the bard levels exceed the rogue levels, after which favored class will switch to bard and it will check the fighter and rogue levels. Since the levels other than the favored class will at all times be as even as possible there will be no XP penalty.
You can execute a backstab as long as the character you are attacking is not directly attacking you.
You're talking about flanking and not backstabbing. If you have a rogue attack a target that's already engaged in melee combat you can get multiple flank attacks which get the backstab damage bonus. If you have your rogue backstab, that target and everything else in sight will lock onto your rogue. Since enemies in IWD2 tend to stay fixed on their first target your rogue loses all flanking opportunities as soon as you draw attention.
about bard...

Actually, when fighting some of the bigger baddies (Ice Golems come to mind), I was able to position my Rogue behind him and have everyone else attack from the front and they never turned to fight my Rogue head on. Besides, with 3 levels of Rogue you are only talking about 2D6 points of extra damage. That's not going to make much of difference latter in the game anyway.

I already talked about both of those points-the first was in what you quoted (read the part about already engaged again), the second was in my original post, second to plast paragraph.
