HOF tips?

Post by Dueller »

I'm trying HOF for the first time, and thought others might have a few tips. Here's what I've figured out for myself so far:

- Mass invisibility works wonders for fights that start as soon as you enter an area. Improved invisibility on a melee fighter is a gods-send.

- Summon lots of high-level monsters and equip everyone with missile weapons.

- Dire charm any bosses, or mass dominate a whole group of enemies.

It seems that the much tougher monsters can be a benefit, as summoned monsters are also a lot tougher, and charmed enemies are usually better in melee combat than your own party members.

Any other tips? I've managed to survive the outside of the goblin stronghold (it seemed all those drums went off at once!), but I'm dreading having to face Slayer Knights down the line. I just hope they can be charmed. :)

- Malison...

...Wail of Banshee and Symbol: hopeless. cast from an optimized sorc (max CHA, GSF)

...but HOF is getting boring quite fast this way...
...wizard casting malison & sorc casting WoB - all enemies dropping dead... ;)

- and at least one melee PC with very (!) high AC and/or blink, MI, blur...
...or many summons... (but this is only the 2nd best solution)

- ...or using cheesy tricks like ORS

Slayer knights can be disintegrated. All bow down to Disintegrate and Wail of the Banshee.

Yeah - I found that out the hard way. Even a few lowly goblins can damage a fighter with an AC of 30. I've found that an AC of 34 with improved invisibility (and the occasional minor mirror image potion) allows a fighter to only just hold his own in melee combat - providing the enemies are kind enough to attack one at a time. I've long since switched to missile weapons...

I'll give malison & WoB a try. Anything that kills in one go (like disintegrate, finger of death, etc) can only be a good thing.

...you shouldn't ignore AC in HOF !

sure an AC of ~30 won't help much as the 3rd & 4th attack will still hit you most of the time - but with an AC of 40 to 55 (what's easy to get) you most enemies will only hit you with their 1st & 2nd attack!

This way you will be much longer protected by MI!

If you manage to get an AC 70+ (what is possible) only very few monsters will hit you even with a rolled 19 on their 1st attack!

Actually there are a lot of ways to get AC of over 70, just read the JUPP and UPP that were earlier viewed on this forum. You must have AC of 72 for it to be effective and on JUPP there is one character that can reach 78. I have tried those parties and liked it so far.. alltough I'm not in HOF yet.

I have posted my party here:

http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/showt ... hp?t=55329

theoretically there are four PCs in my party who can reach an AC between 52 and 72 (what is the effective AC range in HOF)

while 72 gives you total immunity to every besides rolling a 20 and a few unique enemies (like the guardian)...

...everything beyond AC 52 could also be very helpfull escpecially in combination with MI, blur, blink!

...what you need besides an spellsword with high DEX & Drakkas or a monk with high DEX & high WIS are feats, items and spells increasing your natural armour:

- dodge
- combat exp.
- bracen bands (wandering village)
- barkskin (from a level 12 druid)
- haste
- imp. inv.
- Tensers

there are a few more but these are the most importants I remember

yeah but atleast making the caracters rely on feats and min/maxing is not so much cheating as exploiting a bug :)

woah.. I'm not touching that subject with "Nine Paces" or even "Twelve Paces" :D I read a subject about what is considered as cheating before on this forum and it seems that there are as many opinions about it as there are readers on these forums. So forget about what I said Wrath.. we're still cool?

Yeah thanks Wrath :D ! I have been reading these forums for over 2 years or something. First I played BG I & II and now that I have moved on to the realms of 3E rules I have learned to appreciate IWD2. I have considered myself as a noob 'til this day but now I decided to write something cause I had the same problem with Nickademus.. and then I wrote a few other things. But I got to say that these are the best forums there is about BG's or IWD's. Oh yeah and youre cool too Wrath.. and not just because youre from Finland too :) You have nice comments and so does Silverdragon, Brynn and not to forget Kayless and his great guide to multi-classing. Thank you guys for making my forgotten realms games more interesting. :)
