Texas Hold 'Em

Post by jopperm2 »

I just got this new hand-held poker game that I play sometimes when I'm bored and it got me thinking. Until about a year ago I had never played Texas Hold 'Em. Has this game just recently become popular or has it always been, and does anyone like it, or is it getting old already?

Well, I know I'm a bit too young to gamble, but me and my cousins have been going at it for months. It's pretty fun,but not new. But DEFINITLY NOT old. I think it's fun because it scores me loads of cash :D

I don't play poker. I play alot of bridge. Now that is fun. Poker is too short.

I've never played bridge. I've heard it is good though. A lot of people here play Kanasta(sp?). I like somewhat short games, the staying power of poker is that you can keep playing until you have all the money. ;)

Basically. everyone gets two cards in the hole. THen three community cards called the flop are dealt, then one more called the turn, then another called the river. There are rounds of betting between each deal and the object is to get the best five-card hand out of your cards and the community cards.

I play a version that is basicaly the same but there are five community cards, first three communities cards come down, then a round of betting, then another community card comes down, another round of betting, then the final community card comes down, round of betting, end.

That's Texas hold'em. The only difference is that Jopperm used the actual terminology.

For the record. I hate Texas Hold'em. I think it lacks in skill where other types of Poker excel.

@Aegis, I actually kind of agree. There isn't nearly as much skill involved. I just think it's fun to play.

I"m getting awfully tired of seeing it on tv too.. That's why I posted the poll.. :D

Here I go again, bringing up old threads that most people have left for dead... :) Hey, what can I say? Friday afternoon at work, nothing's happening, & I need to kill another ... 51 mins!
For the record. I hate Texas Hold'em. I think it lacks in skill where other types of Poker excel.

Lacking in skill? I beg to differ. Hold'em requires a lot of skill, and if you're not good at the game you -will- lose money in the long run. You'll probably lose money in the short-term as well, unless you get lucky. Other poker variants like Omaha and seven-card stud are very similar in the level of skill required, and the only poker game that really doesn't require that much skill is the good ole (extremely boring) five-card draw.
(btw, a game like high-low omaha is probably the game that requires the most out of a player)

Hold'em has exploded in popularity the last couple of years, mainly because ESPN now airs WPT tournaments and such. Also, movies like "Rounders" have helped the popularity, and especially when Moneymaker, as a total rookie that had never played a live poker event before, went ahead and won the 2003 world champs. I'm positive 500,000 college students picked up the game within a week of watching that amazing final table! :)
Even here in Norway it's getting really popular lately. Especially with influence from the US, certrain cable companies now showing WPT, and also through a reality-show called "The Farm", where the winner of the whole thing is Norway's best poker player. (Or so they say!)

Anyway, I'll finish my rant. I've now got 42 minutes left at work, & we've got a poker game going tonight! :D
"Yes. Later on, I'd love to."

I have to disagree. I'm by no means an expert, my boyfriend taught me to play last year (he used to play at his local all the time), but out of hold'em and five-card draw, I find hold'em far more interesting. The latter seems to me more a case of blind luck, whereas in hold'em it's all about figuring out what other players might have. Anyway, I enjoy it. :)
