so, I got a promotion and a new job which will require me moving to DC.
anybody that lives/lived there that can give me some pointers as to where to live/not live?
due to my doggy, I can't have more than an hour commute, god willing it'll be less though!

congrats on the promotion. i lived in dc for many years. i found that living outside d.c. was the best bet. northern virginia is great, and depending on where in d.c. you'll work, commute shouldn't be longer than hour, though traffic is terrible. the old town alexandria area is a lot of fun, or falls church, etc. depending on what you're looking for. i found actually living in d.c. to be a drag. but, if you're young and looking for the city scene, there are good areas to be found. i'd call up a realtor (even if you're not looking to buy), tell them what you want and check it out.

As WK says, though my wife and I have only been there about a dozen times for a day or two, each. Lots of restaurants, nightlife, plays, concerts, dancing, museums, all in and around the area. He's also right about living outside the city. It's cheaper, safer, the upkeep is better, and the traffic within DC can be horrendous.

Afraid all I know about the DC area is living in Springfield (west VA it think) for around two months when i was six. I remember little apart from eatin at the smithsonian museum, the air and space museum, washington mnument, and a breakfast with santa. And, strangely enough, a sea life centre at baltimore. Oo! And redskins games!

I lived for a lot of years in the Ft. Washington area of Maryland. It's not a long commute, depending where in DC you'll be working, and the area is nice enough. It's not big enough to be a major hassle, and not small enough to bore you to death.
And for me, I avoid Virginia like the plague. The state troopers there have a major god complex
