I'm in a complete funk

Post by Klorox »

I had this game almost beat (ToB actually, I had beat SoA), and I needed a new computer. So I e-mailed myself the savegame files from the old computer, thinking I'd insert them into my new computer. Turns out the new computer is detecting a virus on that old save.

So I need to start over.

I think starting from the beginning of SoA will be fun, but I just don't know how to compose my party.

I really want to hold onto Imoen, Jaheira, and Minsc, because I loved them in BGI too. I don't know how I want to round out the rest of my party though, or even what to play this time!

I previously played a Gnome Fighter/Illusionist, which was cool. I have no problem playing dual- or multi-classed characters. I also like the idea of playing a Sorcerer, and I would even add in a second NPC of my own, if it were interesting enough.

So, as I ramble on, if anybody's got some ideas/suggestions on what to play, or what to add to my good aligned party, I'm all ears.

Again, I need (up to) 3 characters to add to Minsc, Jaheira, and Imoen.

Why don't you try this one:
Anomen
Mazzy
Elven F-T-M protagonist

This will cover your basic needs in every way. An option for BG1 is to waste two tomes of wisdom on Dynaheir and then dual-class her into a cleric.

Could your anti-virus software be showing a false positive? Try two different anti-virus programs, and see what results you get on that savegame.

The old computer may have an internal virus that gets sent along with e-mails that may possibly be hiding in attachments, and your new computer is updated to pick up more recent flags. As Fable said, run a different antivirus before you do anything. :)

But if you run a second check and find nothing out of the norm, turn them off for the duration of your file recovery. Occassionally Norton will scour through my Morrowind files and begin detecting "viruses" on my hard drive, so there's no doubt in my mind that any other system will begin setting off flags for things not infected.

You always wanted to play a halfling F/T wielding the short sword of Mask, didn't you?

I sent the files to my hotmail account. It's hotmail that is picking up the viruses.

Also, Jaheira, Minsc, and Imoen cover all of my "needs" as well, and I'm not going to ditch 'em.

Try copying the files to CD, instead.

Unfortunately, I had no way of doing that on my old computer.

Then do you have a parallel port, so you can transfer files between computers that way?

I don't think so, but is it possible to buy one?

Also, would it be possible to transfer this virus to my new computer if I linked them together?

Yes, it is, if you haven't isolated the virus using antivirus software and deleted the relevant files. That's the first thing you should do: install that software in your older machine, and deal with the virus.

Then, if your savegames are good, you can try to transfer them. Depending on the version of Windows you have, that may not be difficult.

Alrighty, I'll look into it, then!

In the meantime, I'm still open to suggestions on my party, as I will be starting a new game.

I have no idea what or how you want to play. So I suggest:

Wild Mage (for the wonderful random effects)
Imoen (make her a Swashbuckler if you want an extra tank)
Jaheira (the Harper quests are a nice addition to the game, but the romance isn't any fun IMO)
Minsc
Keto (it's a great MOD for SOA that adds a lot of new dialogue)
Jan (for the stories) or Viconia (for a dark romance or interesting experiences with Turn Undead)

I'd use the following MODs:

Baldurdash Fix Pack
Baldurdash Text Update
Weimer's Ease-of-Use (select components)
Sorceror's Place Cloak of Mirroring
Inoshira's Robes of Vecna
ToB Juggernaut Golem Fix
G3 Tweak Pack (select components)
SimDing0 Tweak Pack (select components)
SimDing0 Restored Drow Innates
Oversight (select components)
Acension (select components)
G3 Anniversary Mod (DEFINITELY A MUST)
aVENGER's Rogue Rebalancing Pack (select components)
G3 P&P Celestials
Unfinished Business
SimDing0 Quest Pack
Planar Sphere Return
SimDing0 Improved Oasis 2
Keto
Pocket Plane Group Banter Packs
