Best way to get components?

Post by Conundrum »

What's the best way to get a lot of components to make lightsaber upgrades? I read the GameBanshee KotOR II Lightsaber Upgrade Guide which says to buy lots of Advanced Medpacs but those breakdown into chemicals instead of components for me.

Thanks for any help!

Okay the best way is to have a good repair skill that's high. You'll get more. I don't know how to just keep getting endless components or anything. But from just being on Peragus I got around 250 just going around. Plus on peragus if you go to that computer in the middle of all those side rooms with droids and make them disabled you can walk around just grabbing components from them all. Also besides the stuff you use for your main party just sell everything else for money or components. Why keep it? I've had some things that are worth over 1000 components. Can't remember the name of them, but there are a lot of ways to get components throughout the game.

What I found works best is selling anything that you have found useless (should be about 80% of your inventory). Yes the GameBanshee Walkthrough recommends buying advanced medpacs, and at a high skills (not sure which one, probably repair) you can break them down into 1 component. However I found that repair kits are typically 25 credits and can be broken down at any skill into 1 component, compared to Advanced Medpacs 40 credit value.

My suggestion, find someone who sells infinite repair kits and buy those, then break them down into components. Repair kits are the cheapest thing that can be found infinitely (vendors sell an infinite amount of them) and can be broken down into components. Using this method 1000 credits converts into 40 components. Therefore to get to the Walkthroughs component estimate for a good saber of 1000 components, you need 25000. This seems like a lot, but if you sell most of your useless stuff, you should be able to easily obtain this.

The other suggestion has been to simply break down the useless stuff. I did the math on an Expert Deflection Emmiter that I didn't need. It's component breakdown value was 48 with a repair skill of 20. According to the repair kit credit to component ratio, that should put it's cost at 1200 credits (48 components*25 credits, the cost of a repair kit). It's actual sell value was above 2500 credits. 2500 credits converts to 100 components, 52 more than if you were to break it down. The conclusion, sell your items instead of breaking them down.

Hope that helps.

I broke down my advanced medpacs to 4 components. I used Bao to do this
There is no emotion; There is peace.
There is no ignorcance; There is knowledge.
There is no passion; There is serenity.
There is no chaos; There is harmony.
There is no death; There is the Force.

May the Force be with you...

What was Bao's repair skill? I currently have him around 50 and he still breaks them down into 1.

There's a bug in the game where at least some workbenches use your skill to break down items into components as opposed to the skill of the person using the workbench. I never found one that didn't, but others have commented on being able to. As a Sentinel, it wasn't high on my list to find anyway.

As far as I know, no lab stations have an equivalent bug.

I'm having that problem with the benches... but it's happening with *ALL* benches so far. I'm only on Dxun, though. But for breaking down items, it uses MY repair skill *ZERO*, instead of the character at the bench. Are there any benches that don't have this problem?

My recommendation. DON'T SELL and don't break down anything until you get a repair skill of 20 for the main character (not hard if you take the feat to make it a class skill plus some items). I managed to get that skill at Nar Shaada after Telos (with the Czerka belts).

You get plenty of good items anyway that you can hold off buying anything.

If you sell and buy advanced medpacs to break down into 4 components at 80 credits each, you are effectively paying 20 credits per component.

Once repair skill is 20, you will find that you can break down materials into components at the same ratio to create them. Of course, you can't create advanced medpacs at a work bench :) , just break them down. This way, instead of selling say the Twin Suns special blades at 5500 credits apiece, you can break it down to 500 components (effectively only 11 to 12 credits per component). You will find the economics will roughly reflect that once repair skill is 20.

That way, also I outfitted Mira with the Watchman Blasters (which costs 7600 credits from a merchant) for 380 components per blaster. If I find a better weapn for her, I can break these Watchman blasters back down into 380 components to create something else.

yeah, the best way, in my not-so-humble opinion, to get components is to break down items in my inventory that I'm pretty sure I'm never going to use. There are a lot of weapons and armor alike that break down into 1000 or more components. Early in the game it's not so easy to find things in your inventory that you're sure you won't want to use, but it doesn't matter so much because you don't have the skills needed to make good upgradables anyway. But by the time you have the skills required, you should also have so much crap you're carrying around that breaking down items for components is much more valuable than selling them for money. But I like to keep medpacs around just in case, so I don't like to break them down.
Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and
flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed
he;................................
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Look, since money is really no object by the time you can actually create these components, here's how I solved the issue.

Getting your primary character to Repair 20 is absolutely stupid, especially if you are a Consular. Those points would be far better spent to Charisma and Awareness. SO I left my Repair skill at 2 and used the semi-spoiler-ish info below:

I found a droid, the one across from the Cantina on Onderon. He sells infinite repair kits. If you Persuade him, you can haggle him down to 25 credits each. I bought over 1,000 of those. I can break them down for 1 component each. Those plus the components I already have will give me enough to build all 3 top level Lightsaber upgrades. Whew! Check it out, I have a TON of repair kits!!

You only ever going to need 11 points in awareness as far as I know (and that can easily be supplemented by equipment as well). Persuade doesn't have to be ludicrously high either. I just put 10 in persuade and cast master valor before talking to any NPC and using equipment that boosts charisma. If the PC was female then the dancing outfit for Vogga gives +2 to persuade LOL.

Even with just 14 intelligence and one feat to make repair a class skill, it is not a problem getting the skills you need :D . Of course, you don't have to. You can just leave the PC at 8 intelligence and just get one skill point per level. Seems a shame though since some of the conversation options and puzzles are easier done with a higher intelligence.

Treat Injury is a joke.
