Game crashes and multiplayer problems

Post by Brynn »

Many users ask for help about technical problems like the game crashes ("assertion failed at...", etc) or cannot join to multiplayer game sessions. Anybody has an idea what the background of these problems can be?

In the first case loading a saved game from an earlier point in the game usually helps (in the case of IWD II), but what exactly causes this kind of crash? Are there other ways to solve this?

As for multiplayer problems, I really couldn't think of anything other than router or firewall settings. Moltovir and I were trying to play BG2 last weekend, but the same problem occured and we just couldn't figure how to work it out. This seems to be a common problem for many other users, too, and I just don't know that to say so now I'm asking you for advice

Thanks!

For multiplaying problems:
1) Do you have Win XP as OS? If you do, do you have SP2 (Service Pack 2) installed? I have noticed that SP2 prevented me multiplaying some games, so I uninstalled it.
2) What virus-protection you are using? Ie F-Secure, what I'm using, wants me to confirm every time some program tries to connect internet. Of course, there is setting that it wont ask again when that particular program tries. So what about if your virus-protection denies program for connecting internet before you manually allow it?

These are what I can think now that should be checked if problem with multiplaying.

Re Multiplayer games, all parties need to have identical installations, including patches and game mods.

Ysh: yes, the installation is totally identical, we made that sure. BG2+ToB, two mods installed in the same order.

As for virus protection, I use Kerio Firewall, but had turned it off before we started testing the game.

Also, we're both behind a router. Someone told me to open all the ports to avoid multiplayer problems - haven't done that yet, but if I'll manage to set it up properly and get a result, I'll send you a feedback (I'm sure I'm not the only one encountering this problem... )

Thanks :)

Open the ports the game requires for multiplay. Turn off that xpSP2 firewall, it only gets in the way.

If you're both behind a router, you may need to set up a NAT translation.

Ah... if you're paranoid try to trigger the ports instead of opening it... that way you don't just have open ports sitting in the... uh open.
