Its the same game,
I think the only difference is you and whoever your playing with get to create there own characters.

Yes, but you can also make a multiplayer game and start with a party of 6 selfmade characters.

Yes you can play with others online,but like moltovir said you can do it yourself.

serial is when you have two computers connected to each other...
the other one i think is when you are on a network or is that IP (think they are the same, by the way playing via a IP address is the best way to play) and the modem is the one where you dial out to another modem.
