NWN:CHP1 Helm Cave Chest Help?!(spoiler)
NWN:CHP1 Helm Cave Chest Help?!(spoiler)
OK I've been trying to open this chest in the basement for about an hour now and the only thing I can seem to accomplish is some fire ball damage with my wand. Any suggestions?

That chest has a huge DC and a fairly high damage soak rating. If you don't have either a Rogue with a lot of points in Open Lock and Disable Trap or the ability to inflict lots of damage in a single attack, you can pretty much forget about opening it.
I managed to do it once by going through the entire level and coming back for it just before the end of the chapter after I had raised a level and thrown all of the points I could into Open Lock and Disable Trap.
If you have a missile weapon that does elemental damage (such as fire arrows, for example) you might be able to wear it down since the elemental damage usually is not calculated as part of damage resistance. I don't think I ever tried this on that particular chest because I am usually able to open it through some other means and the one time I couldn't I didn't have any missile proficiencies. But this frequently works on doors and chests that I can't otherwise open, so it might be your only hope. As long as you don't run out of ammo before the chest explodes...

The walkthrough says that you can only open it through using open lock skill.
Also, not even Tomi can open it if you don't boost his level. One thing that can open it except you however is a pixie familiar.
I think the DC to open it is somewhere between 30 and 40.

You can't open the chest by smashing it: I have tried with a longsword, a great axe, a great sword anche a halberd and I couln's even demage it even with a level 9 fighter with improved power attack and doing critical hits. The chest absorbs 5 demages but you inflict 0 demages.
I also tried with a bow and a crossbow with any type of arrows and bolts but without results.
The only way is opening the lock. The DC to open the lock is not so high (36), you should have no problems with a rogue with about 10 points in Open Lock, a good dexterity (bonus at least +2 / +3) and maybe a forcing kit +6 (you can take 20)

36 is pretty high for a Ch 1 chest. I get the impression that Lady-Rose is not playing a pure Rogue character though, which probably means her Open Locks is low. Also, the trap DC is also rather high and it is a Deadly trap.
I'm sorry to hear the elemental damage doesn't work. As I mentioned, I never got the chance to try it but that is my favorite trick when all else fails.

Slightly off topic, but slightly on:
What are we supposed to do with the locks of DC 100, for instance the big door near the gravestones inside Port Llast near the north gate? The henchmen can't beat it down, and I play a rogue extraordinare, but he still can't get through much anything higher than about 50. Are there keys you need for them or something? I had in mind that I'd done all the quests in Chapter 2 and was wondering why I'd never been able to open it/them.

Give us the gate key.
I have no gate key.
Fezzik, tear his arms off.
Oh, you mean this gate key?

I was never able to open that door either. As far as I know there is no key or quest related to this door. My guess is it was part of a deleted quest, like the chest in the Blushing Mermaid in Baldur's Gate. The walkthrough doesn't have anything on this either.

Either that or they just locked it so people can't get into all areas. Since that would give the developers to much to do and the game could be different.

That is a possibility, but usually you get the message that the door is magically locked and cannot be opened. This door gives you the impression that you could open it, but it is just too high a DC. I wonder if the <ctrl> Y cheat would open this door? I am curious to know if there is anything behind it. Probably not, but it would be interesting to find out.
