Poll: Which do you use more often - Fireball or Skull Trap?

Post by Xyx »

Personally I like Skull Trap better. Much cheesier. One big drawback: its range is only barely larger than its area radius...

Skull trap. Due to it's magic damage compared to the fireballs (duh) fire damage. :D

Besides, skull trap doesn't hit a maximum... always increases with level of caster.
Cartoon Law III
Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforation conforming to its perimeter. Also called the silhouette of passage, this phenomenon is the speciality of victims of directed-pressure explosions and of reckless cowards who are so eager to escape that they exit directly through the wall of a house, leaving a cookie-cutout-perfect hole. The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.

At higher levels Scull Trap, it just does more damage than Fireball.
I use Fireball mostly to kill off bands of low level nasties like kobolds or goblins.

Fireball, easily...
It's one of those really popular spells like magic missle etc. The name itself makes you want to use it often. FIREBALL!!! :D

And this is a personal opinion, but I for one can't trust my NPC's while their in battle. They tend to wonder over into cloud kill area's. Therefore my sorc, never chose out skull trap.

Personally I don't really use that many area effect spells if I'm in a party, and if I do it's always fireball out of these two because of it's longer range and I stop using it at higher levels, so it works pretty well. When I solo with a sorcerer, though, I use skull trap all the time.

Fireballs. One of my favourite technics is to run in a Fighter with Boots of Speed and the full Red Dragon Suit into melee, then start fireballing with two Mages and a Bard. The result is pretty obvious...

erm..skulltrap absolutely owns fireball in every way shape and form. Fireball is good early game though, to kill stuff. But skulltrap is a far better investment for a sorcerer imho. for a mage....who cares?use both. Use fireball early and skulltrap later. Skulltrap with lower resist = yummy.

I'm pretty sure that skull trap inflicts physical damage so it's really good against mages who have protection from magic and all that crap, skull trap can penetrate those, so go skull trap!

Both Skull Trap and Fireball blast through Stoneskin/Mantle/Prot from Magic Weapons etc.

Skull Trap is (AFAIK) only stopped by:
[*]Spell Immunity - Necromancy
[*]The Globes of Invulnerability
[*]Protection from Magic Energy
[*]Protection from Energy
[*]Mirror Image

Fireball by more than that.

Skulltrap, by far. Physical damage, increasing with level. I've had some minor accidents though, because of the range/area being so close. :D

Me again,

In my spell book goes skull trap, but I use fireballs more, because of the wand of fire. Also most spell protections that stop either of these spells damage are removed with breach.
Favorite high level mage destroyer tactic:
Cast breach right off, cast web, cast cloud kill, then do what you want. [pure mage solution]
